VACANT SEAT ON BOROUGH COUNCIL

MR. B. J. JACOBS REFUSES NOMINATION. At last evening's annual meeting of the Palmerston North branch of the R.S.A., a member, Mr. J. Smith, asked Mr. B. J. Jacobs, president of tho branch, whether ho would accept nomination for the vacant seat oil the Palmerston North Borough Council. He was of the opinion that Mr. Jacobs’ experience in conducting R.S.A. affairs rvould stand him in good stead on the council, while tho association was entitled to some representation in municipal affairs. The time had come when the returned men must take a wider view of affairs than had been the case in the past. In his opinion Mr. Jacobs would make an excellent representative and the speaker was sure that if he would consent to accept nomination, all the returned men in the borough would get behind him.

In replying to the invitation, Mr. Jacobs stated that provided he was still well and strong when the next municipal election came round, lie would be quite willing to stand in the association’s interests. At the same time, he thought that 'those candidates who had contested tho last election should bo given first chance in the byelection.

Owing to Mr. Jacobs’ refusal to accept nomination for municipal honours, members were obliged to confine their mark of confidence in him to his reelection as president of the association for the twelfch year in succession.
