A visitor to Palmerston North yes-, lerdav was Major-General Sir Andrew' Russell, K.C.8., K.C.M.G., D.S.O. Sir George Fowkls, chairman of Massey Agricultural College Council, leaves to-day on a visit to Australia. He will be away about six weeks. Palmerston North Eotarians at their meeting yesterday congratulated their district governor, Sir Alex. Roberts, on his election to the Mayoralty of Lower Hutt. Mr and Mrs L. TI. Collinson, of Palmerston North, accompanied by their sons Erie and Keith and Mr R. C. Honnld, leave to-day for Sydney on a short holiday. Members of the Palmerston North Rotary Club at their meeting yesterday stood for a moment in silence as a mark of sympathy with Hotarian A, Grigor, in the recent death of his small son.

Archbishop Cattanco, Papal delegate to Australia and New Zealand arrived by Aorangi yesterday. Ho has been in Australia for some time and his visit to New Zealand is purely of a private nature. A London cable message announces the death of Sir Frederick Stopford. Sir Frederick commanded the Ninth Corps at Stivla Bay, and was criticised by Sir lan Hamilton for failing to forestall an enemy occupation of the high ground on August 7, 1915.

Mr J. T. Martin, who retires tomorrow on superannuation from his position as senior supervisor of the Palmerston North postal branch, will be entertained at the annual reunion of the employees of the Manawatu district of the P. and T. department the same evening. The Swedish destroyer Ehrcnskold reached Shearness on Sunday, bearing the body of Sir John Tudor Vaughan, British Minister to Sweden, who died suddenly a few days ago. Ehrcnskold was met by two British destroyers, Trinidad and Tcazcr, and escorted to the harbour.

The speaker at yesterday’s Palmerston North Rotary club meeting was Sir Alex Roberts, of ‘Wellington, district governor. Sir Alex, addressed members, upon a number of points concerning the internal workings of the club, dealing with membership, attendances, Rotary principles and finance. The district governor met members again last evening when the committee reports of the club were presented. A warm wcleoiho was extended the governor by the president of the Palmerston North club, Mr Norman Mackic.

The death occurred at Wellington on Sunday of a well-known member of the Presbyterian ministry, Rev. James Kennedy Elliott, D.D. He was born in Belfast (Ireland) in 1845, and was educated at the Belfast Academy and Queen’s College, Belfast, where he gained his B.A. degree. He studied there for the Presbyterian ministry, and was ordained on December 10, 1872, after which he was placed in charge of congregations near Belfast—at Bandalstown and Magherafelt. In 1884 he was advised that his wife’s health demanded a complete change, and, receiving an invitation from the congregation of St. James’s, Newtown (Wellington), he decided to make the great change and came to New Zealand in that year. He wms a gifted preacher and his sermons were most brilliant. He was Moderator of tho North Island Presbyterian Assembly for the year previous to the merger with the South Island, and, with the late Rev. Jas. Paterson, did much to bring about that happy consummation. He was also one of tho original governors of Scots College. Dr. Elliott did not leave New Zealand until 1012, when he paid a visit to tho Old Country, and in Belfast was given a most cordial welcome (although he had been away for nearly a quarter of a century) and was awarded the distinction of Doctor of Divinity by the Royal College there. Up till the last lie was a book-lover and a student. Rev. -Dr. Elliott leaves two sons—Dr. J. S. Elliott, of Wellington (president of the New Zealand branch of the British .Medical Association) and Mr R. D. Elliott, of the Government School Dental Faculty. His 0n1,7 daughter is Mis J. W. Shaw, of Auckland.
