. The Marion Steeplechase was won by the veteran Matu, while Mr. W. McA. Duncan had the rare honour of having the colours first past the post in the two principal flat events. An improved racer in Taranto was more than equal to his handicap on two occasions. Results: —

How They Ran Red Bank Safe. The Nucleus-Snowy Morris combination was given pride of place in the betting market for tho Open Hurdles, with £390, compared with £3IS entrusted to Bank and £250 to Red Fuchsia. The order over the first fence was Mandarine, Red Bank, Nucleus, Red Fuchsia and Kilburn. Red Bank ran to the front and into tho straight piloted Red Fuchsia, Koauau, Mandarine and Nucleus. At the live furlongs peg. Mandarine was again up in front with Red Bank, Red Fuchsia and Koauau lying next. Mandarine again fell away In fore the straight was reached, where the order was Red Bank, Red Fuchsia, Kilburn, Mandarine, Nucleus and Koauau. In a good sprint home, Retl Bank maintained his advantage over the other All Red by a neck, with Kilburn four lengths away. Mandarine, Nucleus and Koauau finished in that order. The favourite’s exhibition was not at all impressive.

Taranto Takes One.

The Dash Hack was run as two races, the tote being opened for each division. For the first set-to, with eight runners, Inflame had £391 invested on his chances, which was £67 more than Naselle’s total, while Bank Note was a good third fancy. The winner appeared in the less fancied Taranto, which was alwaj-s well placed and beat the favourite by 1} lengths. The order out from the barrier was Bank-Note, Inflame, Taranto, White Ringlet and Good Cheer. Crossing the top, Inflame was in tho van, showing the way to Taranto, Bank Note, Marcnga, White Ringlet, Good Cheer, Vinella and Naselle. Tho order was unchanged as they swept into the straight, but Inflame faltered over the last bit and was one and a-half lengths away from Taranto as he passed tho post. Bank Note was half a length aw-ay, with Good Cheer, Vinella and Naselle as written.

Some Acre Scores,

For the second division, Joy Germ was sent out with £462 and Callapat with £429, but again a good dividend was returned, this time by Some Acre, which beat the favourite narrowly by a head. Wyeford and Joy Germ were the best to begin and crossing the top the favourite had charge from Wyeford, Some Acre, Hopwood and Callapat. The last-named was going strongly at the homo turn but covered more ground than the others and was beaten out of a place. The third horse was Hopwood, two lengths behind Joy Germ and Latakia was fifth behind Callapat. Tho winner finished in good style. Tho northern horse, The Jack Jumper, never looked like a winner and Latakia has still to show a lot of improvement.

Seven Casualties.

In the Marton Steeplechase, 13 horsos were Sent away but during the running more than half of the field became casualties, no fewer than seven falling. Star of the East was a good favourite, being entrusted with £370 of the public purse, with £290 coming for Mountain Crag ouf; of a total pool of £1765. Marcellus tipped out at the first brush beyond the straight entrance precedence to the stand double was Frisco Jack, Banjuke, Star of the East, Mountain Crag, Trouble, Brigadier Bill (which fell here) and Puwhero. The next to succumb was Son o’ Mine, at the five furlongs obstacle. Crossing the top, Frisco Jack and Star of the East were in the lead from Mountain Crag. Trouble was the next to lose his rider. Frisco Jack, Star of the East, Mountain Crag, Puwhero, Vexatious and Matu was tho order the second timo to the front stand, where tho leader fell. Banjuke was toiling along half a furlong in the Tear. Hollycombe and Mountain Crag went at the two succeeding fences. Matu, the winner, was fencing safely, keeping out of possible trouble and at tho last time into the straight, Tan to the front and led Puwhero, Star of the East and Braeman, Vexatious having run off at the penultimate obstacle. Matu was not troubled to win by about eight lengths from Puwhero, with Star or the East ridden out to keep Braeman out of third money, six lengths further back. Tho favourite did not care for some of his fences and had had enough at tho finish.

A Dead Heat,

Tho Winter Hack Race saw a splendid finish, the judge being unable to separato Royal Acre and Skyrider, while Shrewd was only a head awa.y. Wagering took a fairly wide range, Disrank holding £309 and Skyrider £287 and Briar Root £273 of tho £2006 invested. Metellus was rushed to tho front, but approaching tho six furlongs post, Skyrider had charge from Mystum and Metellus and Royal Acre. Tho last-named moved up ono approaching tho top-turn, with Briar Root and Warfille behind Metellus. The order was unchanged as they turned for home; Shrewd was beginning to move up on tho outer. Royal Acre, Skyrider . and Shrewd sorted themselves out within the half-distance and a great tusslo ensued. Behind them came Metellus, Briar Root and Mystum.

Ruanui Returns Confidence,

Eight went into the starter's hands for the Crofton Handicap, the seratchings being Shining Armour and Briar Boot. It was a good betting race, but the bettors sorted out Baunui (£549) above all the others and this time they were right. At the end of a furlong, Starboard Light tore away from the field, with half a dozen lengths to Eoyal Damon, Blimp, Kuanui, Borsalene and Manly. Along the bfiek, Starboard Light was still in the role of pilot, the others being bunched, with Eoyal Damon, Manly, Blimp, Euanui, Borsalene and Imperial Spark running together and l'apatu and Nukumai at the tail. The pacemaker was gathered up at the home turn, where Eoyal Damon was going very freely and Euanui and Imperial Spark were moving up. Euanui had charge at the distance and keeping up well to his task, won without apparent effort from Papatu, which came strongly at the death, by the greater part of a length. Imperial Spark was only half a length away, then two lengths to Blimp, followed in by Borsalene, Eoyal Damon, Starboard Light and Manly. Papatu made up a great deal of the ground in the second half of the journey, but Euanui would have been hard to beat in any other circumstances. Blimp was again unimpressive.

Duncan’s Double,

Moa Bird (£418) ran out a £5 better favourite than Limited for the Flying Handicap. Both were paying a decent price, as the aggregate investments were £2243. Victory again came to the Fovdell stable, Limited leading throughout. Prominent from the barrier rise were Limited, Broad Acre and Vast Acre, with the rest strung out. Behind the winner into the straight appeared Dobbin, Broad Acre, Kcddar, Vast Acre and Moa Bird. Keddar unwound a characteristic run, but was not enough and was behind Limited when the judge was reached. Two lengths further behind was Broad Acre, then Dobbin, Moa Bird, Whenuanui, Vast Acre and First Acre. Taranto Takes Two. Thirteen lined up for the Farewell Hack Handicap, which saw White Binglet, The .Tack Jumper, Vinella, Mademoiselle and Taranto making their second appearance of the day. cess, was installed as favourite with £382, Warflamo being supported to the extent of £373 and Australis, £365. The public formed a pretty shrewd estimate of the respective merits of these threfc, though Australis beat WarflaJno for second money. Australis, Warflame and Vinella soon sorted themselves out, but Taranto was in the lead before the turn and kept in front to win narrowly by a head from Australis, with Warflamo nearly a length away. Vinella, Grattan and White liinglct were next.
