Rulings on Game. Rulings given by the interpretation committee of the New Zealand Hockey Referees’ Association recently are as follow: Question —Rule 10: If the ball has been hit by an attacker in the circle, and is stopped by the goalkeeper, or any other defender, and thereupon hit by him, whether deliberately or by accident, into the goal, should a goal be awarded' to the attacker? —Goal, no other interpretation possible. . „ If during a penalty corner, the attackers have feet or sticks in circle, what should be done? —Order tho corner to be taken again. Referees must enforce rule to see both sides are outside the circle lines and goal lines. If during a penalty bully the defender deliberately strikes the ball over the goal line, not between tho posts, what decision? —Take bully again. A player rolling in the ball must have his feet and stick behind the line, and it is obvious tho stick must be in the rollers’ hand. If this rule is not complied with, tho roll in must be giv&n to.the other side ,as the penalty. A player is offside but cannot be penalised for being offside, unless he plays the ball or in any way interferes. The fine point of the interpretation rests on how a referee views ‘interfering’ and this requires careful watching. If a man is standing offside near a back who touches a ball, according to the rule the touch puts him onside; but we rule ho would have been interfering with the back’s play before the 1

ball was touched by attracting attention and should be penalised. The playing with the flat side of the stick obviously refers only to the striking of the ball. It is almost impossible to hook a stick, which is permitted with any part of it except t-he curve (which is not tho flat side) and we rulo that the curve is intended to be for the hooking mentioned and permitted.
