ANZAC DAY IN FEILDING

Soldiers’ and Citizens’ Services

CLAIM LARGE GATHERINGS

Anzac Day, the day of remembrance, was fittingly observed in Peilding and district yesterday. A parade of .150 returned soldiers marched to St. John's ■ church, where an impressive service was conducted by the Rev. Canon Petrie, assisted by the Rev. Bullock, of Mastcrton, and the Rev. McDonald. The church was filled to overflowing and the service was fully in accord with the spirit of the day. The sermoti was preached by the Rev. Bullock, who made his description of Germany’s fateful boast of power intensely interesting. The result of the Great War had proved, according to the views expressed by the preacher, that the philosophy of the kind preached by the Germans and which became their creed, could not endure. Anzae Day was a- day of remembrance of those who laid down their lives to disprove such sinister boastings and of all those who made possible this peace. At the. conclusion of the service, Mr Cliff Bell, of Wellington, sounded the Last Post and then followed a short service at the church memorial. The returned men under Major P. Cameron M.C., president of the Feilding Returned Soldiers’ Association, then marched back to the Square, led by the Salvation Army band, where wreaths were placed on the Great War and South African war memorials. The soldiers were then entertained to luncheon by the Ladies’ Anzac Day committee .at the Parish hall.

In the afternoon, the Citizens’ memorial service was held in Manchester Square! There was a particularly large gathering. The Salvation

Army band led the singing and the Rev. McDonald of the Presbyterian Church delivered an appropriate address. The proceedings were in each case shorter than formerly and concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.
