LONDON’S COSTLY FOGS
Serious damage is caused to the plants in the tropical houses at Kcw Gardens by fog. The chief sufferers are the climbing plants which festoon the sides of the great Palm llouso. After each bad fog the exterior of the Palm' house has to be thoroughly cleaned by men with hoses and brooms. This is a big job and costs more than £IOO. All the smaller houses have to be treated in the same way. When fog is expected the plants are kept as dry at the roots as is consistent with safety, and no w-ater is allowed to lie about on the floors or stages.
