LATE SPORTING

Lady o~xier Wins Grand National RACE IS A FARCE SAYS CRITICS. United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. Received Sunday 5.5 p.m. LONDON, March 22. The following is the result of the GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE, a sweepstakes of 100 sovs, with 5000 sovs. added; four miles and 556 yards. Mrs W. A. Gemmell’s ch g GREGALACH (by My Prince—St. Germaine), 7yrs., 11.4 1 J. M. Whitney’s ch g EASTER HERO (by My Prince—Easter Week), 9yrs., 12.7 .. 2 R. M‘Alpine's RICHMOND, 6yrs. 10.6 •. , 3 There were 66 runners. Won by six lengths, with Richmond a bad third. The' going was unusually good. Every horse cleared the first fence, but ten fell at the third. There were about twenty-two standing up the first time round. Seven passed tho judge, but three others also completed the course. One horse broke his neck, and there were several bad spills, but the jockeys were' not seriously hurt. At the fourth fence Easter Hero was out alone, with Sandy Hook and Richmond following. Easter Hero continued to jump magnificently, and led until the canal turn tho second time round, where he jumped alongside of Richmond. Sandy Hook then was third, but fell at the next fence. Easter Hero drew away, hut Grcgalach was prominent, coming strongly, and jumping extraordinarily well, with apparently a good chance of winning. Easter Hero entered the straight first, and led at the penultimate fence. Gregalach, full of runni"". challenged Easter Hero, and elearci? the final jump well ahead. Despite the fear that tho colossal field would spoil the world’s greatest steeplechase, the Grand National was a successful race. It is notable that 100 to 1 winners annexed both the Lincoln and Grand National, and they both belonged to women. Mrs Gommcll. tho owner of Grcgalach, won £13.000. About a dozen horses fell at the nodn ditch in front of tho third fence. Twenty-nine negotiated the canal fence while two fell at the brook. The Morning Post learns that despite the unwieldy field the conditions of the race won’t be altered. A contrnvv view is held by Trevor Wignall. Tho Daily Express says owners and winners are unanimous in declaring that the Grand National is developing into a farce. It is no longer a Tace. Unless .something is speedily done the National is doomed. The race nowadays is not even a reasonable gamble and’the attendance grows smaller every year.
