WAIKATO FARMERS ON MATTERS OF MOMENT
PUBLIC JOBS BY CONTRACT. STANDARD WAGES ON RELIEF WORKS A MISTAKE. t Per Press Association. HAMILTON, Last Night. “This conference is strongly of tho opinion that the payment of standard wages upon relief works is not in tho true interests of the Dominion or the workers themselves, as the inevitable effect is still further artificially to attract capital and labour from the exporting primary industries.” This was the first remit passed by iho Waikato Farmers’ Union to-day, preliminary to tho Dominion conference. Another remit favoured nationalisa* tion of tho main highways and that construction work should be done by contract. In order to improve dairy produce, tho conferonco urged the Government to appoint cream graders for dairy factories.' Grading pigs for export was also recommended. Tho need of more co-ordination in tho marketing of dairy produce was pointed out in another remit.
