100 GUINEAS FOR HALF-SISTER TO RAPIER. A sale of thoroughbred brood mares and foals was conducted by Messrs. Abraham & Williams, Ltd., at Palmerston North on Thursday morning on account of Mr. J. P. Thorpe, of Awapuni, and Captain Gage Williams, of Trentham. The former breeder offered six lots and only one failed to change hands, although in that instance there is a prospect of a private sale being effected following upon an inspection by the intending purchaser’s trainer. While there was a good bench of interested onlookers, bidding was somewhat dull throughout and lOOgns. for Ania, the half-sister to Wednesday’s Gold Cup winner, Rapier, was the top piicc recorded, it being interesting to note that the purchaser was Mr. G. G. Holmes, of Christchurch, tho owner of Rapier. The complete list disposed of was as under:— Bay mare, Pleasure (Merry Mixture —Heather Lea) with filly foal at foot, by Acre and in foal to Acre, to Mr. H. Palmer, of Otaki, at 65gns. Brown marc, Your Queen (Our King—Lady Ainslie), with foal at foot to Gasbag and in foal to Gasbag, to Mr. B. Burgess, Masterton, at 24gns. Chestnut maTO, Starveldt (Rooscveldt—dam full-sister to Ilautere) with foal at foot by Acre and in foal to Acre, to Mr. H. R. Peacock, of Waipukurau, at 56gns. Brown mare, Great Effort (Provocation—Effort), in foal to Acre, to Mr. J. O’Donnell, Bunnythorpe, at Signs. Bay mare, by All Red—Esk Maid, by Vladimar—Elk, with foal at foot by Gasbag, to Mr. A. P. Easton, cf Foxton, at 75gns. Chestnut mare, Ania (Solferino — Anitea), with filly foal at foot by Sky Blue and in foal to Leighton, Mr. G. G. Holmes, of Christchurch, at lOOgns. This last-named entry, a half-sister to Rapier, was offered on behalf of Captain Gage Williams. The bay maro Taupiko, by Woolawa —Mere Mere (San Fran—Maude), with foal at foot by Gasbag and in foal to the same sire, was passed in at 25gns., the reserve being 40gns. In this instance private overtures are being made, otherwise the complete catalogue was disposed of.
