RICHLY COLOURED DAHLIAS

Make Effective Display AT FEILDING FLO WER SHOW Rows of richly coloured dahlias of rare size and exquisite quality greeted visitors to tho Feilding Horticultural Society’s autumn flower and produce show held at tho Drill liall yesterday, their beauty contributing to the artistic success of the exhibition and more than compensating the officials for the disappointing support. For some reason or other, the Society of late years has not flourished as might bo expected in a town which demonstrated in the numerous jiretty gardens a well developed love and appreciation for flowers. As the Mayor (Mr E. Eair), who is also patron, said in opening tho show, the Borough council set an example in the gardens at Kow-hai park and in the Square and as far as ho could sec, there was in the tow T n an evident pride taken in tho cultivation of flowers. This was reflected in the bloom exhibited, certainly, but not. to the degree the society might expect. The quality made up for the absence of quantity but it is not encouraging to tho devoted officials to deal with only a few select entries. OVviously tlie time has arrived when consideration will have to be given to methods of creating more interest in tho society’s work. The Mayor congratulated the society on the excellence of the blooms and wished the officials every success. Support in the decorative section was not good although the entries were such as to merit warm praise. In the novice section, Air. IV. B. Faulding, of Halcombe took flrst prize for the dechrativo table.

During the .afternoon, Mrs J. G. Eliott and the Misses Eliott were presented with posies by Mrs F. Y. Lethbridge and Mrs E. P. C. Swainson, in appreciation of their help to the society in -providing the musical programme. The stall holders did good business throughout the afternoon and evening and the various competitions should benefit the society. Point’s Prizes.
