GLARE ON HORIZON OFF KAPITI ISLAND
Seen at Paraparaumu POSSIBLY MEMBER OF FISHING FLEET AFIRE WIRELESS WARNING. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Night. At about 7.30 o’clock to-nigbt, tho Postmaster at Paraparaumu reported that a glare was visible at sea off Kapiti Island, and that it seemed to indicate that some craft was on fire. Station 2YA was requested by the Marine Department to broadcast a message to the bird sanctuary custodian at Kapiti, asking him to make an examination. Following the direction broadcast, a flare was lit on tho island to indicate that the message had been received from 2YA. Tho glare was also reported to bo visiblo at Otaki, as being faint and on the horizon west of Kapiti. The coastal steamer Kapiti and the motor auxiliary vessel Kotiti would bo in tho vicinity to-night. It is considered likely that ono of the Cook Strait fishing launches must have caught fire.
