RAPIER WINNER OF AWAPUNI GOLD CUP

Telegraph to Benzora Gay Ballerina Takes Sire’s Produce Stakes Alhough tlie Manawatu Racing Club’s autumn meeting at Awapuni yesterday opened in blustering weather, with a heavy shower before the first race, it cleared up later and the weather by the end of the day was fine and mild. It was a good day’s racing and although favourites generally failed to respond, there .were no very large dividends. The course w'as on the holding side, following the recent rains but suffered hardly at all for the day’s activities and will be in great order for to-day. The winner of the Gold Cup was Rapier which beat Night March after a good tussle. Benzora won the big sprint and Gay Ballerina easily captured the 21st Sires’ Produce Stakes. The attendance was up to that of previous years. The lawns and gardens were never better and formed a delightful setting. to the garden racecourse of New Zealand. The tote put through £21,752, against' £24,341 for the first day last year.

How They Ran

Vivo the Hurdles. Vivo, winner of the Hurdles, was strongly challenged in the straight by Diana's Lad and Red Fuchsia, but had enough pace to get homo by one and a-half lengths from Red Fuchsia, which beat Diana’s Lad for second money by the greater part of a length. The favourite, Gala Day, began to fall away half a mile from home and finished sixth. Gala Day and llymestrasou were first away, tlie latter soon taking the lead from the favourite, with Vivo and Red Bank next, then Red Fuchsia and Diana’s Lad. Gala Day had charge along the straight the first time, with Red Bank, Vivo and Hymcstrason in close order. Red Bank fell at the stand fence. Vivo had a good lead approaching the back from Hymcstrason, with Diana's Lad closing the gap and the favourite obviously finished with. Vivo, Diana's Lad and Red Fuchsia was the order into the straight, and after the placed horses came Vexatious four lengths behind Diana’s Lad, Gala Day, Hymcstrason and Brigadier Bill.

Mothplane’s Flight. Seventeen maidens went to the post for the Autumn Plate, Mothplane being a hot favourite, with £lB4 more than Vinella. Ex Dono and Oral led out from the barrier, Tigrano then moving into second place, with Mothplane and Warzone handy. Ex Dono had a few lengths to spare as they ran into the straight, with Mothplane drawing closer at every strido and Oral, Warzone and Grattan in good positions. Mothplane had no difficulty in overtaking Ex Dono in the final half furlong, while Warzone was six lengths away. Grattan was fourth and Oral fifth. Bright Glow the Uest. With In the Shade, Silver Paper and Bonognc withdrawn from the Prince oi Wales Handicap, eight smart horses v/ore left to contest the nine furlongs race, for which Blimp was a staunch favourite, wich £2Ol more support than Bright Glow. The favourite, after flattering his supporters to the straight, fell away badly in the final furlong and finished second to last. Ruanui broke the tapes and with Mendip, made the running out of the straight, tha order as they ran to the back being Mendip,/ clear of Ruanui, with Blimp, Bright Glow, Soatown, Tresham, Discourse and Tidal. With half the journey done, Mendip was still in ehargo from Bright Glow, Blimp, Tidal, Ruanui and Tresham, with Discourse tailing the field some lengths in the rear. Mendip, Bright Glow, Ruanui, Blimp and Tidal w , ere in close order at the homo turn. The top-weight overhauled Mendip half-way down tho straight and won by two short lengths, with Ruanui four lengths away. Seatown came late on the outside to get fourth place, then came Tresham and Tidal, Blimp ana Discourse. Bemera Wins. Heavy seratehings left 15 runners still in the Woodhey Hack Handicap, which was won by Bernera from enrl to end. The favourite was Goodwill,

which was’- entrusted with £164 moro than Second Thought and the winner third in tho public’s estimation. Berncra, accompanied by Inflame, got away well, Dermod being at the rear of the field. Malahst, Second Thought, Shoe Silk and St. Melba were in the second bunch. The winner’s nearest attendants at the straight entrance were Inflame, Goodwill, Endorse, and St. Melba. Endorse finished two lengths behind the winner, with Australis, which camo fast out of the ruck and Malahat only heads away. Goodwill was filth, followed by' Second Thought and Le Champ. Inflame petered out at tho business end. Endorse went a good race. Australis was unlucky to get lost in the shuffle as. they swept into the straight. A Certainty. Gay Ballerina was at a Gloaming price for tho Sires’ Produce Stakes. The public was never on a greater "moral.” Polyxena and Equitant made the running, with the favourite on the rails next and Clever, My Own and Duellona in that order. Tho positions remained unchanged till they were well inside the straight. Gay Ballerina went to the outside and in three strides took the lead and won as she liked. Polyxena had to be ridden to head off Equitant. My Own was fourth and Clever and Duellona together last. Bapier’s Gold Cup. Night March was a £llß better favourite than Rapier for the Awapuni Gold Cup, which was a five-horse affair. Tho winner ran behind Commendation, Night March and Laughing Prince, with Pegaway last, for the first half of the journey. At the half-mile he moved up into third place and at the distance joined issue with Night March, Commendation dropping back to last. It was a sharp struggle, but Rapier beat tho favourite by a length, with Laughing Prince third, a neck away. Pegaway was a close fourth and Commendation last. The pace was slow till the half-mile, then it livened up and they sprinted home c^ - the last 200 yards to do 2.9 4-5 on the holding ground. Rapier’s victory was a genuine one; he carried too many guns for the Derby winner. Commendation stopped quickly once Rapier headea him and Pegaway found the others too good. He ran last till heads were set for home but he could not improve by more than a couple of lengths, which was not half his early handicap. Laughing Prince stayed on well and he may show more improvement later. Benzcra’s Sprint. Benzora won the Telegraph Handicap in good style, sustaining a challenge from the dead-heaters, Mervette and Dobbin in tho final dash by two lengths. Kilmezzo finished very fast in fourth place. Limited and The Raider were first away and when the field had settled down the order was Tho Raider, Limited, Benzora and Dobbin. A couple of furlongs further on, Th* Raider was clear of Limited, with Benzora on the rails and Broad Acre and Mervette together next. Into the straight, The Raider still had the advantage of Benzora, with Broad Acre, Dobbin and, Limited right up. Ben- ;

zora made his run as soon as they straightened up and going on had two lengths to spare at the finish. After the fourth horse, Kilmezzo, came Broad Acre, Limited and The Raider in a bunch. Dobbin came again fast after losing his early position and was unlucky not to bo able to get his nose in front. The favourite, Ridgemount, was left at the start and was never prominent in ilie running. He was £S2 better supported than The Raider, which was not ridden to advantage while Lysander was third favourite, with £203 less than the favourite. The winner paid the best price of the day. Atholspear the Last. The third favourite of the day to get home was Atholspear, which had a big call on the betting in the last race, with £360 more money than Briar Root. Several others were closely supported in a big pool. Skyrider tried to win all the way and got a big break on his field, but was overwhelmed when the whips came out. Tho early leaders out the straight and to the back were Skyrider, Disrank, Roi de Val and Briar Root. Along the back, the leader increased his lead by half a dozen lengths, but at the straight entrance, Roi de Val, Disrank, Clavers, Briar Root and Balloon were at his heels. Briar Root made a forward move and had charge 30 yards from the post, but Atholspear, which had been for the most part at the far end of the field and was second to last of the eleven runners into tho straight, came with an overwhelming run on the outside and won by a length, with Balloon two lengths behind Briar Root. Clavers, Skyrider and Kawhakina finished behind the placed horses. Briar Root's effort was a good one, but it was quite overshadowed by that of tho winner, which dropped from the clouds to take the prize and save the punters' money. ACCEPTANCES FOR TO DAY.
