MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB. From Our Own Correspondent. The local club opened the 1929 season last week with a goodly number of members all eager to again got into shooting form. A considerable proportion of the members this year are young shots and the first evening was taken up with group shooting, rifle sight-test-ing, etc., so that when the club met again on Monday evening of this week the ordinary routine was at once put into action. Some o. the older members at once found their range and put up fair shooting. The notable performance for the evening was the target of (39 returned by Manawaroa To Awe Awe, the veteran of the club. By his good performance he secured the first trophy of the season and received the hearty congratulations of all the members. Mr 11. Bond, 'president of the club, in making the presentation, referred to the winners good sportsmanship and the fine example ho always showed to the young members. The club was indeed fortunate in having the services of such a keen rifleman and good sport as Manawaroa. The speaker hoped that he would again and again have the pleasure of presenting trophies to this genuine sportsman. As the members have not yet settled down to their work the detailed scopes will not be given this week, but now

the guns are in first-class order in a few weeks the general average of the shooting should reach a high standard. School Athletics. For the third Saturday in succession the local school’s team of runners journeyed forth to represent their school on the field of sport. Messrs. Russell, Whiteman, (limblett and Simmons kindly convoyed the following team: Ada Gimblctt, Vina Thomson, Myra Simmons, Eona Russell, Laurie Wilson, Elza Simmons, Haydn Walker, Winston Moore, Ncpia Larkins, Harry Rcdshaw, Douglas Donaldson, Elden Donaldson, to Sanson to compete in the McKelvie Shield competition. In all the team competed in 24 events, securing five firsts, 8 seconds, and S thirds, making the good total of 39 points against the strong team from Foxton D.H.S. The headmaster of the Foxton school commented very favourably upon the splendid performance of the country children and highly commended the good team spirit which was so strongly in evidence. The winning of the shield was of secondary importance compared with the inculcation of such a spirit. This sports gathering concluded the competitions for the 'present season and soon hockey and rugby will again be the main team games at all schools. Main Highway Construction. The Manawatu County Council has made a start in filling in the depression on the roadway in front of the Railway station. The soil is being transported in motor trucks from the sandhill in front of the school property.

During flood times this low-lying portion of the road is frequently under water to a depth of several feet. When the work is finished the new roadway will be on a level with the railway filling and so will be high and dry. Besides being a boon to the travelling public this road construction will considerably improve the appearance of the village.
