DONATIONS TO MASSEY AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE
CONCESSIONS IN DIPLOMA COURSE. The Council of Massey Agricultural college met yesterday under the chairmanship of Sir George Fowlds. The donation of £25 from Sir J. G. WiLson (Bulls) for an annual medal for the sheep farming course, was accepted with thanks. Several other donations were also received from donors who prefer to remain anonymous. Notification was received from the government that the erection of the refectory building had been authorised. Negotiations are still in progress regarding the main science building. The council agreed to the recommendations of the recent conference between the New Zealand Dairy Factory Managers’ association and representatives of the college regarding the diploma course in dairy manufactures which covers a period of three years and involves the subjects of genera) chemistry, bacteriology, dairying and bookkeeping (first year); dairy bacteriology, chemistry, book-keeping, butter of cheesemaking (second year); and dairy factory construction ’and management, engineering and butter and cheesemaking (third year). This is a new diploma and as there are a number of men in the industry of very wido experience, especially as regards the work of the second and third years’ courses which deal with actual manufacture of dairy products, the College council decided to allow candidates who have not less than five years’ experience (including at least one year as either factory manager or first assistant) to sit for the examination after two years' instruction at tho the college of about four weeks each year in the case of factory managers and about six weeks each year in the case oi first assistants. A committee consisting of two representatives from the college council and two from the Factory Managers’ association will be set up to determine what applicants have qualified for the concession recommended in the preceding paragraph. All applications for this concession must bo made to the registrar, Massey Agricultural college, Palmerston North, and no application will be accept later than 31st. December 1929. This concession will remain in force only during the years 1930, 1931, 1932. It was formally reported that Mr. A. Morton (Taranaki) had been reappointed as a government member of the council. Advice was received from the New Zealand agents of A. C. Rowson, Toolcy Street, London, that the latter would bo donating £25 as a scholarship available for the dairy manufactures diploma course. Prof. Riddet reported on the progress of the stock and farm, on which everything was going satisfactorily. The pig recording work was still in progress and farmers were showing interest in what was being done as well as gratitude for advice which the officer gave in the course of his duties. The council expressed gratification at the excellent financial returns shown by Mr McCulloch, farm manager, from sheep and wool.
