Tho death occurred suddenly yesterday of Mr. A. J. Barr, secretary of the Stratford A. and P. Association. Speaking at the banquet in his honour last night Sir Joseph Wgrd announced that ho had appointed Mr. J. S. Hunter, assistant to the general manager of railways, to take charge of the recently created Transport department. —P.A. At the fifth annual conference of the Federation of New Zealand Justices’ Association at Now Plymouth yesterday, Mr. H. Trimble (Taranaki) was elected president, Mr. A. Lawrence Gee (Timaru) vice-president, and Mr. I. Salek (Wellington) registrar. The membership is 1946, an increase of 303 for the year, during which three new associations were formed at Timaru, Invercargill and Gisborne. —P.A. The mortal remains of the late Mr. W. H. Brown were laid to Test in the Palmerston North cemetery yesterday in the presence of a large assemblage of deceased’s friends, members of the clubs and sports associations of which he was a member, brothers of the Buffalo lodge and officers of the police force. An impressive service was conducted at the graveside by Father Herlihy and Bro. R. Andrews (Buffalo lodge). Seventeen nominations have been received for tho twelve vacancies on the Manamatu A. and P. association committee. Retiring members renominated are Messrs H. Akers, W. D. Carson, B. G. Gower, H. E.
