GERMAN PLANE MAKES FLIGHT WITH CRUDE OIL

JUNKERS ALL-METAL MONOPLAN 600-HORSEPOWER 10SEATER PLEW 10 MINUTES. BERLIN, Feb. 4. For the first time a German airplane fitted with a crudo oil engine in place of the ordinary gasolino engine, has made a successful flight. The airplane used was an all-metal Junkers air traffic monoplane with a seating capacity for 10 passengers and fitted with a GOO-liorscpower Junkers heavy oil engine. . . Tho plane flew 10 minutes, cruising over the town of Dessau, the seat of the Junkers works, and making a soft landing in the flying field. This flighty marks another milestpne in the development. of aviation because the heavy oil

engine aviation experts believe it is destined to re-place tho gasoline engine of the future. Its three advantages are: heavy oil is not so explosive as gasoline, therefore the danger of airplanes catching fire in crash is greatly lessened; heavy oil engine more reliable because sturdier; more economical. Professor Junkers has been working several years on development of the new engine. The present is the second improved type. Thq cylinders are double cylinders, with one crankshaft above, one below the cylinders. One of the most difficult problems to be solved in constructing heavy oil engines is reduction in weight. Professor JunkeTs seems to bo on the Tight way to accomplish this. Heavy oil engines will be installed in his new giant all-metal monoplane whieh is now under construction. It will have a spa nof 45 metres and the wings will be so thick that some passenger cabins can bo built.,inside them. Moreover, there will be tunnels leading to each of the four engines, so these can be repaired if necessary during the flight.
