ANNUAL MEETING OF HIGH SCHOOLS BOARD

Mr W. R. Birnie Re-elected j Ckirman j _ i i REPORTS ON WORK DONE j DURING PAST YEAR j Mr. W. E. Birnie presided at the monthly meeting of the Board of. Governors of the Boys’ and Girls’ High! schools held last evening. There were also present Mrs Aitchison, Messrs W. L. Fitzherbert, J. A. Nash, M.P., W. F. Durward, M. H. Oram, T. E, Hodder and J. W. Kutherfurd Mrs M. Bhodes (principal of Girls’ High school), Mr. J. Murray (rector Boys’ High school) and Mr G. G. Hancox (director Technical school) were : Iso in attendance. An apology for absenco was received from Mr O. Monrad. The reports presented were as follows. Boys’ High School. The rector, Mr. J. Murray, reported as follows: 8011, 385; average attendance, 371. The appointments committee recommend the confirmation of tho appointment of Mr C. E. fctraubel M.A., and Mr. J. K. Brown, M.A., to D grade positions. The annual swimming tournament was held on March 1, tho senior championship being won by A. Penman and the junior'by J. Neilson. The school team won the secondary schools shield at the life saving competition of the Manawatu centre of the Eoyal Life Saving Society. The cadet company go into camp on April 6 at the Showgrounds for a week’s training. Girls’ High School. Mrs M. Bhodes, principal of the Girls' High school reported as follows: The roll number is now 253, the average attendance for the past month being 240.6. The school has as a result been raised to grade seven. Owing tp the increase in the roll two vacancies were created on the staff, ono of which has been filled by the appointment of Miss V. Castle, M.A. Tho vacancy caused through the appointment of Miss MeHaffie to a position atrNelson Girls’ College has been filled by the appointment of Miss M. Coyne, M.A., of Auckland, who will take up her position immediately after the Easter holidays. The swimming sports held on February 28 were very successful. The senior championship was won by V. Jones and the junior by J. Watters. Two teams from the sehool competed for the shield presented by the Eoyal Life Saving Society, the A team being placed second. A tennis team from the Dannevirke High school visited Palmerston North on March 16 and defeated the school A team by 8 sets to 4. A successful garden fete, organised by the Parents’ Association was held at the school grounds on March 13. The money raised will be devoted to the assembly hall fund.

Technical School. Mr. G. G. Hancox, director of the Technical school reported as follows: The annual swimming sports were held in tho municipal baths on February 22, the boys’ champion being Cyril Siddells and the girls’ champion, Nola Milverton. On March 15 a fire broke out in the new plumbing room and caused damage estimated at £4O. Scholarships have been awarded as follows: Cosmopolitan Club day trades, lan Carruthers; A. and.P. day trades, ltoy Metcalfe; Cosmopolitan Club evening, Colin Bateliffe, William Gupwell, Mavis Warner, Sidnoy O’Sullivan and Matthew Eeid. j Mr W. A. Baldwin is relieving inj the building construction class in placo of Mr A. It .Allen. Annual Meeting. At tho conclusion of tho ordinary meeting Mr W. It. Birnie presented the annual reports for the three schools under the board’s control. Ho also thanked members for the support given him during the past year.
