LONDON, March 17. An astonishing spectacle is promised at Aintree on Friday when the Grand National Steeplechase is likely to be contested by 60 borses. There are 30 obstacles in the 4£ miles of tho stiffest country in the world. The field compares with 37 in 1927 and 42 in 1925. There are _ 86 still left in the race which has thrills enough with a normal field. On, thia occasion, the. danger will be

most serious because there are insufIficient steeplechase riders to mount all the horses, and stable boys will have to be requisitioned. Experts suggest that the number of starters should be drastically reduced in future by converting the Grand National into a weight for age event, instead of a handicap. One thousand Americans, including 15 millionaires, will be present to witness the Grand National Steeplechase in which 10 American-owned horses have been entered. The American hopes arc centring on Mr. J. Whitney’s Easter Hero and Dir. Howard Bi’ucc’s Billy Barton which ran second in the Grand National iu 1928. BAY OF PLENTY ACCEPTANCES. AUCKLAND, March 17. The following acceptances have been received for the Bay of Plenty Jockey Club’s meeting on March 23 (including rehandicaps):— TRIAL PLATE HANDICAP, 5

Awapuni Jottings For the first day of the M.R.C. autumn fixture to-morrow, excellent acceptances have been received. The entries including the classic total 124, which is 38 mote than last year, most of the handicap fields showing an increase over those of the 1028 fixture. The recent rains have freshened up the course which will be in excellent condition by Wednesday. They have also put a bloom on the flower beds and lawns, a matter of equal importance from the point of view of the pleasure of patrons. Red Heckle, which was beaten' as favourite in the New Zealand St. Lcger Stakes at Trentham on Saturday, has been scratched for the Awapuni Gold Cup. The field however, despite the earlier defections of Rapine, Star Stranger and others, has enough material of tiro best sort left to provide a race in keeping with the traditions of the star event on the programme. Commendation, the Awapuni candidate, will bo opposed by Rapier, ltoremoana, Pegaway, Laughing Prince, Bright Glow, Concentrate and Night March, all of which good performers, have recent form. In the Sires’ Produce Stakes , Gay Ballerina, which won. the Eclipse Stakes at Trentham on Saturday, will now be required to carry her full penalty of 141b5., which brings her up to 8.11. Keddar, the winner of the Railway handicap at Trentham on Saturday has incurred a penalty of lOlbs and the locally-owned, and trained gelding will now carry 8.0 in the Telegraph handicap. In the Woodhcy Hack handicap. Cool Mint, a winner at Opunakc, and Valuation, a winner at Trentham, have both incurred penalties of lOlbs, their respective poundages now being 9.5 and 8.1.

About 80 horses will arrive from Trentham by special train to-day. Gay Ballerina has been sold to Mr. H. G. K. Patrick, of Australia. She is to be trained by George Jones, and will race at Palmerston North this week, and probably at Auckland before being shipped to Australia. ' Silver Paper, which was an acceptor for the Telegraph Handicap to-morrow, is an unlikely starter. His trainer will probably take him back to Christchurch to prepare for the Great Easter. Through tickets and car tickets may be obtained by motoring patrons to the course at Mr C. M. Hastings’ bookseller shop in Coleman Place.

Two Interesting Pedigrees I. NEDDA. The victory of Nedda in the rich Sires’ Produce Stakes at Melbourne, warrants a few comments on her pedigree. She comes of a branch of the Flora Mclvor (IS) family. Until of recent years, this branch was credited to the Woodstock line. How this mistake arose is set out in the preface of Vol. IV., of the New Zealand Stud Book, which says: “It has been a matter of common notoriety that on an order for delivery of the filly by Diomcdcs from Waimea, another filly by Diomedcs from Phoebe was in. error substituted, which mistake was never rectified. . . . Proof has been ad-

duced of tile substitution. ’ ’ Baupo, the Waimea (IS) filly, was a stud success. Her first foal was the common bay Mata, who was just shout of being a champion. His half-sister Maryfr by Daniel O’Rourke (14), a son of Sledmere (imp.) and Brunette (imp.), founded a branch, from which many very good mares have come, including Prosser’s beautiful mare Marguerite, Artillerie, Trim, Jeanne d’Arc and now Nedda. Martyr threw Huguenof to Apremont (3); and Huguenot’s first Ally was Merisctte by the Nordenfeldt sire Medallion (8). She was in Mr J. F. Beid’s stud. With admirable courage and skill he put her to the Nordenfeldt' horse, Stepniak, one of the foals being named Jessie Lewars. It will be seen, therefore, that Jessiej Lewars was incestuously inbred to Nordenfeldt; but seeing that he was a very sound stout horse, a very stoutly bred horse and of a lino that stands inbreeding, the result was good. Jessie Lewars was mated with Bolceby, a complete outeross, but bringing in St. Simon and Galopin. Michael a, the daughter, won amongst other races, the Stewards’ Handicap by lengths in 1 min. 11 3-5 seconds. Her owner selected Paper Money as her mate in 1925. Nedda is the result. The pedigree works out exactly to rule. Paper Money returns to Michaela, St. Simon, and Galopin through his sire Greenback. His blood is otherwise an outeross with a wealth of Sterling (12) and Oxford (12), which has usually hit with Musket. NEDDA. Michaela Paper Money.

St. Ardent (Newmarket Handicap.) His dam Probation’s pedigree will interest most New Zealanders. She and her dam (Culmination) were both bred by Mr W. E. Bidwell, who has never had reason to regret tho day he gave 400 guineas for Stepfeldt a»t the dispersal sale of the Sylvia Park stud on the last day of 1903. Miss Gladys, tho dam of Gladsome, then a three year old, brought 720 guineas, top price; and then came Stepfeldt and La Cloche 400 guineas each. Steppe the dam of Stepfeldt was a half-sister to the sensational Derby winner Hermit} he be-

ing by Newminstcr and she by that long, low, roach-backed, varminty black Saunterer. He won the Goodwood Cup, tho Fitzwilliam Stakes and the Prix do L’Empereur as a 4 year old. “Once he got on his legs he was a horse of great speed, but he was not a quick beginner,” says a jockey who rode him. Steppe was imported by Mr Stead and proved a success from the start. Bussley, a neat bay son of Doncaster uon several races for him. To Nordcnfeldt Steppe threw She, dam of that galloping machine Bobadil, Stepniak, who could both go fast and stay. Stepfcldt tho third result of the mating nearly filled the great Lord Falmouth s requirements in a brood mare. He with, two exceptions, only bred from mares, that (a) as 2 year olds, (b) had not raced after 4 years old. Stepfeldt did not win as a 2 year old, but in her four starts she was ono second and two thirds in good company, and she went to the stud after hei four year old racing. As a three year old sho put up a sensational performance, when she beat that greax Maxim mare, Blue Fire by a head in the Auckland Derby. When Mr Bidwell bought her she bad a filly foal (Culmination) at foot by San Francisco, brother to St. Frusquin, and was ia foal to him again. Tho product was that astoundingly good horso Elevation. Stepfeldt threw foals every year from 1899 to 1909, and among them were Elevation and Provocation; but some breeders would have been chary of sending a mare 5 years running to a horse of Birkenhead ’s breeding, successful as he was. In 1911, however, when 20 years oTd, she threw Deputation to Martian. Elevation’s three year old career was illuminating. Ho was beaten by a nose in the Hawke’s Bay Guineas and a head in the Jubilee Cup. He won the King Edward Handicap, and at the C. J.C. meeting, after being unplaced in the cup, won the derby and Canterbury Cup. Within three weeks ho won tho Feilding Stakes (five furlongs), carrying a 101 b. penalty and beating a very hot field. He never Tan again in New Zealand. Culmination was a black mare and her mother a brown; and yet although San Francisco was a bay horse with a brown ancestry, Elevation came chestnut. Culmination was put to Downshire and threw a mare called Probation, dam of St. Ardent; so that in the fourth generation from the grandly bred Steppe, the winner of a great race comes from. he&
