SPORTING

RACING AT BULLS. The Rangitikci Racing Club, one of the veteran clubs of the Dominion, is well situated for catering for sporting patrons over a wide district and the fields i>romise excellent racing for the opening day to-day. The iirst event is timed to start at noon. The recent rains will have removed all the sting out ,of the ground. OHAKEA HACK HURDLES, H miles. Novar 11 11 Banjuke 9 3 Airtight 10 6 Bangiutu 9 0 Hymestrason 911 Gun Area 9 0 Six acceptors, with the possibility of a one dividend affair, will tend to keep back punters from making an early beginning. Hymestrason would appear to stand a good chance under the conditions but for the presence of Airtight, which seems to dominate the position. The top-weight, with nearly three stone of lead to lump, does not make the same appeal as he did on the other side of the range. TRIAL PLATE (all 8.0), 6 furlongs. Andy Regan Postman Rillet Red Lane Goldlike Pegeen Ogc Kosher Naselle Habit Skyrider Grattan Lucretia Monoie Reflecto Oral Some Acre Dawn o’ Day Miss Atlanta Lady Lucerne With a good marble, Naselle, Skyrider and Rillet should be equal to the others, which have shown no form. RANGITIKEI CUP, li miles. Star Area 9 2 Imp. Spark 7 7 . Orazone 8 0 Locarno 7 7 : Moutoa Glenstar 7 1 ■ Treasury 713 Hipo 7 0 ; Cashier 7 11 Briar Root 7 0 The Cup field, with every horse engaged having shown some form recently, will provide a good race. The topweight has climbed up in the scale with a rapidity which must present his : chances fresh before us, aDd he will bo one of the favourites. Cashier is ] another that will claim attention and Locarno’s recent racing has proved he , has the combination of speed and stay- . ing power. A good many followers of Foxton form will be on be favoured by the going arc Briar Root

TROTTING. HANDICAPS AND PENALTIES. The following handicaps were omitted from the Manawatu Trotting Club’s handicaps:— LADIES’ BRACELET: All Red scr. LONGBURN HANDICAP: Bonniowah 36yds. bhd. POHANGINA HANDICAP: Sailor Boy 36yds. bhd. For the Manawatu Trotting Club’s meeting the following penalties have been declared: — LINTON HANDICAP: Tamahine 12yds. bhd. STEWARDS’ HANDICAP: Carmel Slyds. bhd. POHANGINA HANDICAP: Carmel 72yds. bhd. MANAWATU CUP: Carmel, 60yds. bhd. ■ PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP, Carmel 36yds. bhd. MELBOURNE NOTES. MELBOURNE, March 4. Impartial was scratched for the Australian Cup at 3.40 to-day. Gothic is still showing signs of lameness, but his trainer is hopeful that the horse will throw off the trouble. Crowdel goes to Sydney this week. M. M'Carten will ride Leadlight in the Australian Cup. Cairns will ride The Banker, and O’Brien Mondiaga. A Night Patrol colt was sold for £I2OO to Mr. E. Fisher to-day.

Moutoa Treasury. Imperial Spark has mounted from the minimum scale and will have to be at his best to beat the field. Glenstar is a good sort of hack and two other lightweights that will be favoured by the going are Nucleus and Hipo. The latter, particularly, showed ho had staged a comeback in Taranaki and ho is well treated. The writer considers he should show up prominently at the meeting. The two most fancied are Star Area and Hipo. NGATIAPA HACK HANDICAP, 7 furlongs.

Elysianor and Acred seem to hold command of the field here. Volplane, which showed some form at Dannevirke, might be the best of the others. SCOTT MEMORIAL, 6 furlongs.

Unless Cimabue is drawn well out, he should make an uneven finish to an even dispatch. Vast Acre has been going on the right way and will be one of the shortest-priced runners in this field. The Raider will be favoured by the track and the going and his prospects cannot be denied. Glenstar, which also figures in the Cup, will, no doubt, be sent over the shorter distance, when his chances, if not exactly dazzling, should be bright. These four seem to stand out, but a final choice is exceedingly difficult. Following the latest form exposed, it semes that Vast Acre has a good chance of doing the hat trick.

In the absence of Elysianor, which has also been accepted for in the Ngatiapa Hack, Gasnapper has the best credentials. This is an event in which a surprise could easily occur, however. CLIFTON HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, 7 furlongs.

Maui, Gold Cure, Manly and Vigilance should do something with this stake. Of the four, Manly stands out. CARNARVON HACK HANDICAP,

The big field for the last event is sure to induce a big pool and wagering will take a wide range. Warfille, Lucky Bag and Marica are a trio that will have plenty of friends.
