SILTING UP OP WAIKATO RIVER BECOMING WORSE EVERY YEAR, Per Press Association. HAMILTON, Mar. 3. A conference has been called at Hamilton for Tuseday to consider the silting of the Waikato River and the consequent frequent flooding of the lowlying area. The trouble becomes worse yearly. Captain C. Roose, the head of a shipping, company with several vessels navigating the Waikato, told the Waikato Times that the authorities were throwing money away by spending thousands in raising the road at Mercer above flood level. Tho floods would rise still higher unless silting was prevented and the railway also would havo to be raised. In the meantime, thousands of acres of farm land were being ruined by long periods of flooding. Captain Roose advocated dredging the lower reaches of the river and also building groynes to assist the scouring by the current. The silting had greatly increased j, since the Arapuni hydro-electric dam was built and the river diverted.
