YOUNG MAN CARRIED OUT BY STRONG TIDE

DROWNING AT ST. HILDA FIRST FATALITY AT BEACH FOE FIVE YEARS. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Last Night. James Rackley, a young man, aged 20 ypars, was drowned while bathing in the surf at St. Hilda yesterday afternoon. Accompanied by a girl named Marion O’Connell, he was bathing about 100 yards on the Lawyer's Head side of the safety zone, which is clearly marked by two red flags. There were few people about at the time but those who saw the bathers did not at first realise they were in any danger, as both swimmers were within their depth. On hearing tho girl call out, another swimmer helped her to shore, while two others attempted to swim out to Rackley. A very heavy surf was running and this, in conjunction with the strong tide rip setting to ards Lawyer’s Head, rendered their efforts futile and by the timo they were able to reach the spot "where Rackley was last seen, ho had disappeared. Rackley, was employed at Shacklock's foundry. This is the first drowning accident which has occurred at St. Hilda for nearly five years. The body has not yet been recovered.
