Twenty-eight head of stock impounded off the Palmerston North streets during February returned in fees £$ 2s Gd.

The Palmerston North branch of the S.P.C.A wrote to the Palmerston North Borough council last evening urging that, provision be made on next year’s estimates for a proper lethai chamber for the destruction of dogs and cats. It was decided that the matter be referred to the engineer to report to the incoming council. Cr. M. A. Eliott gave notice of motion at last night’s meeting of the Palmerston North Borough council that the council accept tho whole of the accident insurance risk of its employees. For six years it had accepted half the risk and during that time, a fund of £2OOO had been accumulated. He saw no reason now why the council should not accept the whole risk. The question of arranging matters concerning employment of ex-soldiers during the forthcoming winter has been referred to tho incoming council by the present Palmerston North Borough council. An application by the R.S.A. for remission of part of the current year’s rates has been referred to next year’s estimates, with a recommendation that a rebate of £lO be granted.

Tho proportion of cows to bullocks slaughtered monthly at the Pialmerston North abattoir continues to increase, if one may judge from the return submitted to the council meeting last evening. Details were: —Stock slaughtered: Cows, 278, heifers 26, bullocks 77 calves 33, sheep 1252, lambs 267, pigs 2023. Stock condemned: cows 10, pigs 61, sheep 4. Fees received: £3OO 15s lOd.

Recently Cr. A. E. Mansford asked in the Palmerston North Borough council for a return comparing the cost of laying footpaths in hot-mix and concrete slabs. The engineer reported to the council last evening that the cost of laying bituminous concrete pavements as laid in tbe Square, including the taking up of existing surface was 3s 6d a square yard. The cost of slab concrete would be 9s 51d a square yard.

The Borough council is considering a suggestion from the Manawatu Automobile club that a gas ring with a penny in the slot machine should be installed at the motor camping grounds at the Esplanade, also that, a small building should be erected for hot baths with a Is in the slot for the use of a califont, and that improved sanitary accommodation should be provided. Members of the reserves committee will meet members of the club on the grounds to-morrow morning in order to consider the facilities required.

The Palmerston North hospital board yesterday decided to purchase a whirlpool bath which, according to Dr. Frank Ward (medical superintendent) would be of great help in tho treatment of certain cases of fracture. Tho board took considerable time to agree to the proposal, which will involve an expenditure of about £l4O, owing to a desire to keep hospital expenses as low as possible. However, they were finally persuaded when it was explained that the stay of tho patients in hospital would be much shortened as a result of tho equipment.

The Manawatu sub-centre of the Royal Life Saving society desires to tender to thoso members of the public who attended its evening carnival on Saturday, a very sincere apology for the unavoidable absence of the Maranui champion life saving team which was to have been present. The non-ap-pearanco of the team was caused by the breakdown of their bus at Otaki, and members did not reach Palmerston North until 3.30 a.m. on Sunday. Fortunately, Messrs. Claridge and Penman were able to come on ahead by car, but other members of the team suffered considerable inconvenience in obtaining transport. The Manawatu sub-centre of the Royal Life Saving Society wrote to last evening’s meeting of the Borough council requesting that with a view to encouraging candidates to undergo instruction and submit, themselves for the awards of the society, and to foster the popularity of enclosed pool swimming among the community, the Borough council, and Terrace End and Central school committees should grant freo passes to their respective baths for one year to all children under 15 years of age qualifying for the proficiency certificate of the Royal Life Saving Society. The council agreed to accede to the request as far as the Municipal baths were concerned*
