MOTOR LORRY LICENSE FEES

ARE THEY TOO HIGH? INTERESTING FIGURES. In view of the investigations now being made by tho Main Highways board respecting the incidence of motor lorry taxation, County councils and Fanners’ unions are considering the question of heavy motor taxation and the revenue for road maintenance derived therefrom. Some sources have expressed the opinion that the taxation should be reduced and the government has intimated its sympathy in this direction.

On the other hand, certain local bodies are opposed to any reduction and have prepared data in support of their contention that the taxation is not affecting the heavy motor traffic business.

The following details supplied by the Rangitikei County council, show that motor taxation has had little or no effect on motor lorry freight charges:— 1924. —Dairy produce, Bulls to Greatford, 4s peri ton; dairy produce, Bulls to Wanganui, 21s; coal, Greatford to Bulls, 4s 4d. 1925. —Dairy produce, Bulls to Greatford, 3s fid; dairy produce,_ Bulls to Wanganui, 16s 6d; Wanganui to Bulls ("back loading). 9s; dairy produce, Bulls to Palmerston North, 10s; Palmerston North to Bulls (back loading) 7s 6d; coal.
