FARMERS’ UNION TO FEDERATE WITH D.F.U.
“AMALGAMATION OR NOTHING” SAYS MEMBER.
According to the president of the Manawatu provincial branch of the New Zealand Fanners’ Union, that body will bocorne federated with the New Zealand Dairy Farmers’ Union as from April 1, 1929. "It is now common property that the Dairy Farmers’ union has agreed to federate with the Farmers’ union on terms set out in a memorandum to be signed by both parties,” The federation will take place as from April 1, 1929, but I might point out that the D.F.U. is not seeking representation on the executive,” said Mr. 0. P. Lynch, chairman of tho branch when referring to the matter. According to the minutes of the Dominion executive meeting of the New Zealand Farmers’ union, combined representatives of the two bodies had met and agreed on federation on the following terms: — (1) The New Zealand Dairy Farmers’ union to pay the New Zealand Farmers’ union annually 7s 6d in tho £ on all levies collected from members of the former body. (2) The federation of the two bodies to commence from April 1. (3) The organiser of the New Zealand Farmers’ union to organise for •
both bodies, Farmers could join either of the two unions but the organiser would carry enrolment books for both organisations. (4) The New Zealand Dairy Farmers’ union would have one representative on the Dominion executive of the Farmers’ union and one on the advisory board, a total of two on the whole of the executive.
(5) Representation at the annual fcrence would be on the same basis as that for provincial executives of the New Zealand Farmers’ union, viz., one delegate for each 500 members or part thereof.
At the conclusion of a brief discussion on the subject, Mr. P. Gloyn expressed the opinion that the two bodies would have to amalgamate, or remain apart. Although the Fanners’ union has agreed to the above terms, the Dairy Farmers’ union executive, at its meeting on Thursday last decided to draw the attention of tho Fanners’ union that to them, the most important clauso had been omitted from tho agreement namely that the Dairy Farmers’ union is to have full control of its own affairs. When tho missing clauso is inserted tho Dairy Farmers’ union will sign the federation agreement.
