LATE MR JOHN BETT

REFERENCE IN ST. ANDREW’S CONGREGATION. During the course of his sermon at St. Andrew’s church yesterday, Rev. G. T. Brown made reference to the death of Mr John Bett which occurred on Thursday and the loss the town had sustained by his passing. Rev Brown said: “To-day this congregation laments the loss of one of its old members in the death of Mr. John Bett. Latterly absence from Palmerston North and ill health preyented him from taking an active part in the affairs of the congregation buc jn the strength of his days, he served the cause of Christ here in many activities. He was always a large and generous hearted soul and many a worthy cause profited by his sympathetic interest and generous benefactions. His Chiistianity was not so much a matter of words but of deeds—and he let not his left hand know what his right hand did. He did secretly many kindly acts which he would have blushed to have had known, hut which were not unnoticed by Him who said, ‘Whosoever giveth a cup of cold water in my name shall in nowise lose his reward. Inasmuch as ye have done it unto the least of these, my brethren ye have done it unto me.” “To-day we unite in commending to the Father of all consolation his widow md family and all his loved ones who to-oay mourn hi* loss.”
