CHAMPIONS IN ACTION AT ATHLETIC MEETING

Manawatu Club Fixture

JAVELIN THROW—2I6ft. 5-Mn-

MISS BARRON’S FINE PERFORMANCE.

From a sporting, point of view, the meeting staged by the Manawatu Amateur Athletic Club on the Showgrounds on Saturday was an all-round success? but the public, although fairly large, might have been better. As a result of good handicapping, the majority ot the events were closely contested, the competitors including two New Zealanc. champions in Stan Lay (Hawe.a) an T Oakley (Maßterton). A special challenge 100 yards arranged between Miss Norma Wilson (Gisborne) and Miss Phyllis Walker (Wairoa) did not eventuate, owing to the illness of tho former runner. How ever, Miss M. Barron, of Foxton, took Miss Wilson's place and to the delight of the spectators, defeated tho Wairoa runner by seven yards in the creditable time of 11 4-5. , . In a subsequent 100 yards off scratch, Miss Barron ran the distance in 11 2-ssecs., which equals the New Zealand record, but she had an advantage or the wind that was blowing side on. Lay’s effort with tho javohn also won for him tho spontaneous acclamation of the spectators, when it was announced he had beaten the Austialasian record by 10* feet. Although the wind which blew in gusts across the line of flight, was fairly heavy and was an assistance to the throwers, it had dropped for the moment wheD Lay’s turn came. His effort, therefore, can be taken as a throw under calm conaitioßS. Tom Oakley, who has the New Zealand cycle championships for one mile and 3 miles to his credit, was late in arriving,' but gave good performances in tho races in which he competed. Detailed results are as follows, the addresses of outside competitors being given:— Cycle Events.
