From Our Own Correspondent. Personal. Mrs. J. A. Parnell is away for some time in the Sounds. Mr. and Mrs. H. Hook returned from a holiday in the Wairoa district early last week. Mr. Hook; reports great success with the rod and rainbow trout. Mr. Maunder, of Palmerston North, was tho preacher at both services at both services at tho Methodist Church yesterday, when harvest thanksgiving services were held. Pending tho arrival of Mr. Wedde, the newly-appointed koadmaster at the Shannon school, Mr. A. H. Morgan, first assistant, will, carry out the duties of headmaster. Mr. L„. W. T.... Svfift, of Piimmerton, commenced duty to-day as relieving assistant master. There was a large.. attendance of players present at the weekly euehro tourney held in Laurvig’s hall on Thursday evening. As on previous occasions the games w:ere keenly contested, the players spending a vory pleasant evening. At the conclusion of the games supper was served. Th 9 winners for tho evening wore:—Ladies: Mrs. Radford, 51b. box of tea; Mrs. McLaggan, 251 b. bag of flour; Mrs. L. Jones, lib. of tea. Gents: Mr. Peach, 51b., box of tea; Mr. K. Sands, 251 b. bag of flour; Mr. W. Radford, lib. of tea. The following became eligible to compete at the end of the session for the valuable gold watch:-—Mesdamcs Jeffries, Butler, L. Richardson, Miss M. Grey and Messrs. Erickson, E.‘ Thorne, R. Harding, P. Buekman and C. Pritchard. Parewell to a Popular Headmaster. Mr/ and Mrs. A. T, White and Miss L. C. White have been the recipients of many eulogistic remarks on leaving Shannon, where Mr. White has been headmaster of the local school for the past four years. On Sunday evening last,, at the conclusion of tho service, the Vicar (Rev. A. J. Parnell), on‘behalf of the parishioners of the Ven. Bedes, wished them, farewell and tho best of good luck after references to Mr. White ’s work as church-warden, the vicar handed Mrs. White a box of stainless table plate as a token of appreciation for all their good work. On Monday evening the bowlers gathered in their pavilion and presented Mr. White with a wallet,

On Tuesday the members of the Shannon Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club bade him farewell.

On Wednesday afternoon the committee, teachers and children of the Shannon school assembled in the infant room and paid their farewells. On entering the room Mr. and Mrs. White were given a great ovation.

Mr. Hyde, chairman of the School committee, in addressing the assembly, referred to the four years of strenuous work Mr. White had carried out at the school, and to his success as a teacher, and the valuable work he had done in connection with local sports clubs. He also referred to the confidence the chil dren placed in him and the affection in which he was held by.children of ail ages. Their loss in losing Mr. White was a real one, but that would be Carterton’s gain. On behalf of the committee and. teachers he ■ asked Mr. White to accept a small token of tho esteem in which he had been held, in

the shape of a silver mounted bowler's bag suitably inscribed. Mrs. Thompson handed Mrs. and Miss White two beautiful bouquets of summer flowers. Mr. Morgan, assistant master, on behalf of tho children, presented Mr. and Mrs. White with a travelling rug. The chairman, on behalf of the teaching staff, asked Miss White to accept a token of appreciation for the services she had rendered in preparing cocoa for the children during the winter months and supervising the refreshment arrangements on sports days. On' rising to reply Mr. White was again accorded rounds of hearty applause. He said that although his four years in Shannon had been strenuous, they had been pleasant. Ho had never wanted for friends or amusements. Ho had always endeavoured to do his duty as a teacher and as a citizen. He hoped that the school would continue to prosper and he knew that he would always receive a hearty welcome from tho boys and girls who had come under his charge. He thanked them for the valuable presents and regretted he was leaving them. (Applause.) The singing of “They Are Jolly Good Fellows" brought a pleasant function to a close, after which the teachers entertained the guests at afternoon tea. At the conclusion all joined in sing-

ing “Auld Lang Syne." Immediately after Air. and Mrs. and Miss White left for their new home. Plunket Society’s Garden Party. For tho purpose of raising funds to carry on their work in Shannon the committee, of the local branch of the Plunket Society held,'a garden party and baby show on Wednesday, after-

noon in tho beautiful grognds belonging to Mr. .Woods; at Otaura, which with its magnificent' .trees, shrubs, flowers and prettily laid-out lawns made it an ideal spot for holding a garden fete. There was a very large attendance and with the numerous babies, several of whom were in decorated gocarts, all assisted towards presenting n gay and busy scene. The baby show was the premier attraction, a very largo number of entries competing in each class. The judge, Mrs. Waddle, had a very difficult task in selecting the winners. Tho display of decorated go-carts, dolls’ prams and tricycles attracted considerable attention, the competitors having gone to a lot of trouble, some being very original. Apart from these attractions, there was plenty to interest the public in comDetitions. and races

for the children, while those who desired to mako purchases were able to do so at the produce, cake and fruit salad stalls, all of which did big business.

King, who did tho carting. Otaki Bowlers’ Vlsiit. Three rinks from the Shannon Bowling Club played a friendly game against the Otaki Club at Otaki on Saturday afternoon, whero a most enjoyable time was spent. Otaki proved •victorious by two games to one, with an aggregate score of 66 points to 57. The scoros were as follows, Otaki being mentioned first:— Hawea, Whyte, Windley, Ponlington (s.) 13, lost to Baxter, Henry, Butt, Whibley (s.), 22. Brown, Smallbone, Nicolson, Noble (s.) 25, beat Thurston, Pranks, Jones, Morgan (s.), 13. Amycs, McGill, Young, Smith (s.) 28, beat Leng-Ward, Hill, Roach, Knowloa (s.), 22. Gala Night. A most successful gala night was held by tho Shannon Bowling Club on Wednesday evening in which forty players took part—Shannon four rinlis, Terrace End (2), Eoxton (2) and Levin (2). Three games of three-quarters of an hour each were played ,the rink to win tho most games to be declared tho winner. Tho rink skipped by A. H. Morgan (Shannon) came out on top by winning all three games. Players had a , most enjoyable time, all tho games being closely contested. During the evening- tho ladies provided coffee and refreshments, which were very much appreciated. At the conclusion Of play, Mr. W. Clayton presented the trophies to the members of the winning rink, Messrs. A. H. Morgan, H. Knowles, B. Braun and C. Grey. Mr. Morgan; who is president of the Club, in returning thanks, stated that it was hoped to hold a similar gathering again before the season closed. Tho local croquet pins again changed hands on Saturday, when after very closo games Mesdames Picard and Whibley, the challengers, defeated the holders, Mesdames Blaikie and LcngWard, the scoro being 2G—24.

Tennis. The Shannon Tennis Club played a friendly game against Boston on the [ Boxton courts on Saturday afternoon. Shannon proved victorious by 14 sets to 10, with an aggregate of 129 points to 108.
