IS IT A RECORD?

PERFORMANCE OF NELSON FRIESIANS. At the recent Nelson A, and P. Show, three representatives bred in the “Mayfield” stud of pedigree Friesians owned by Mr W. C. Hammond of Richmond, Nelson, put up a very unique record. The animals concerned are the bull, Mayfield Prince, now owned by Mr E. G. Coppell, the cow, Mayfield Manor Queen, and the dam of these two, Princess Johanna Pauline, tho two latter still being in Mr Hammond’s herd. Mayfield Prince and Mayfield Manor Queen, the winners of tho malo and fernalo championships respectively, are full brother and sister, both being sired by Lanedowm Manor King, a grandson of Manor Beets Daughter 2nd. of Ashlynn, (BG3lb. fat at 3 years), and from Princess Johanna Pauline, as stated above. The latter, besides being a grand-daughter of Lady Pauline (8501 b fat) was placed second to the champion in the mature cow classes.

It must be very pleasing to Mr Hammond when it is known that he was the breeder of three animals of such type as Mayfield Prince, Mayfield Manor Queen, and Princess Paulino Johanna — even more so as Mayfield Manor Queen w r as successful in winning the milk testing competition held in conjunction with the show, while Princess Pauline Johanna was also runner up in this competition, as both these cows gave a total of over 811 b. milk in two milkings on the day of the test, they are surely proof enough that production a-J type go hand in hand in the Black and White breed. As far as the writer knows, it is a record for two cows (daughter and mother) to be placed Ist and 2nd., in the mature cow class in the’ show ring, and then to secure the same places in the milk trials, while a full brother and sister (referred to as daughter

above) secure the championships at the same show, their dam being runner-up to her daughter. It is to bo hoped that this performance arouses interest, in tho Friesian breed throughout the Nelson district, as it is convincing proof that this dairy breed will hold its own in that district. •
