JUGO-SLAVIA BUILDS SOME 800 MILES OF NEW HIGHWAYS

ROAD IMPROVEMENT INCLUDES CONSTRUCTION OVER RIVERS OF 50 BRIDGES. BELGRADE, Jan. 22. A recent Teport of the Ministry of Public Works shows that tho State of Jugoslavia is building a large number of roads and bridges. In 1920 a programme was accepted by tho Ministerial Council calling for the building of 2248 kilometers, or 1350 miles of new roads. This work is being done in part by building commissions in various centres of the country, such as at Zagreb, Ljubljana, Novi Sad and Sarajevo. The Ministry has built 366 miles of new roads, and the commissions 426 miles, and many old roads also have been repaired. Most of the roads that have been completed or are under construction aTe in Serbia and Macedonia. Some are in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Generally speaking, there have long been fairly good roads in most of the former Austro-Hungarian provinces. One large bridge has been built over the Danube and three others are under construction. Three new bridges, of which one is very large, have beep built or are being built over the Save river, four over the Drina, 16 over the Morava, five over the Vardar, and more than 20 first-class iron bridges over other rivers.

Of course, much remains to be done, and probably many years will pass before the roads in all parts of Jugoslavia equal the excellent highways in Slovenia, tho most mountainous part of the Kingdom. Yet much progress is being made, and tired travellers who still jounce over rocky roads or get stuck in the mire may comfort themselves with the reflection that Serbia has improved her roads more in the last decade than during tho preceding century.
