BRITAIN’S SHIPS GOLDEN ARGOSIES WELFARE VITAL. REPRESENT NEARLY ALL TRADE SURPLUS AT HOME. Australian Press Association. Received Saturday, 2 a.m. LONDON, Feb. 22. Sir W. Cunliffe Lister at a dinner of the Chamber of Shipping, disclosed that the Board of Trade estimate of last year’s trade balance gave £150,000,000 on the credit side. The Daily Telegraph points out that towards this substantial surplus, the shipping industry contributed £130,000,000. There could scarcely be a more striking or more definite proof of the value of the merchant service. Its welfare must have a prime interest for any government, as its earnings help to pay for the food and raw materials we must buy from abroad.
