The Opiki school’s first annual picnic was held hast Friday on Mr W. Jackson’s estate “Woodleigh.” Perfect weather prevailed and a most enjoyable day for young and old was spent on an ideal picnic ground which lay between a sandy beach along the Manawatu river and a patch of native bush. A bounteous supply of refreshments, including soft drinks, fruit, sweets and ice-cream had been provided by the committee. After lunch had been disposed of and all small children had received a present from the bran tub, a sports programme was put through, the results being as follow: Girls under seven: T. Sadd 1, L. Larsen 2, P. Allwright 3; boys under 7: D. Young 1, V. Alvo and J. Clark (dead heat) 2; girls 7 —10: V. Hender-. sou 1, D. Bugiass 2, P. Corley 3; boys 7—10: J. Paget 1, W. White 2, L. Young 3; girls 10—12: J. Hodgson 1, J. Young 2, E. Sadd 3; boys 10—12: W. Corley 1, L. Henderson 2, W. Young 3; girls over 12: E. Sadd 1, R. Young 2, M. Henderson 3. Young ladies: Miss Corley 1, Miss R. Young 2; young men: Ist. heat: J. Young 1, J. McSwigan 2; 2nd. heat B. Seifert and D. Mason (dead heat); final, B. Seifert; girls 3-leggcd race: E. Sadd and M. Henderson 1, M. Corley and B. Seifert 2; boys 3-legged race, W. Corley and W. Young 1; married ladies race: Mrs. Corley 1, Mrs. Bolton 2; married men: G. Allwright 1, H. Sames 2, E. Henderson 3; ladies’ consolation: Mrs. Henderson; young ladies’ consolation: Miss R. Seifert; girls’ sack race: V. Henderson 1, C. Seifert 2, E. Sadd 3; boys’ sack race: W. Young 1, L. Henderson 2, W. White 3; committee men’s race: W. Jackson and E. Henderson (dead heat); boys’ wheelbarrow race: W. Corley and W. Young 1, P. Alve and J. Paget 2; sack race (all coiners): final: Miss C. Seifert 1, Miss Purden 2, Miss Perfect 3; guessing competition: girls, Jean Fkers; boys, Phil. Alve. At th o conclm on of this programme, afternoon tea was partaken of and trophies were presented to the winners of each event by Mr H. Akers. Two special trophies presented to the oldest. lady and gentleman present were secured by Mrs. Young senr., and Mr. A. J. Croft.
