LEVIN AND 00- LTD. Messrs Levin and Co. Ltd. report:The fourth sale of the season began last evening and finished to-day. Tho offering was 27,270 bales, to which we contributed 6188 bales.

Since the last sale here, the market which was then so strong, has taken a decided dip downwards. The movement began towards tho end of the London January series and tho sales in tho South Island have shown a steadily receding level of prices. What the reason is, no one can say. Probably there are several. It is reported that the manufacturing end of the trade is not finding an outlet for its products and buyers of raw wool havo therefore lost the confidence exhibited hore in November and January. The preparation for the English general election and the momentarily unsettling effect of tho proposal to bring tho woollen industry under the Safeguarding of Industries Act and the incroase of the bank rate have had a cumulative effect upon prices. We clcarod about 90 por cent of our catalogue. America was a good buyer of super crossbreds of all qualities, provided the style was suitable and some good sales were made; viz:—"TAS/ Fairfield" 18 bales at 18Jd and DM/ Ditton, four bales at 18’d and six at 17Jd. Bradford and Continental buyers were free bidders for all grades of average and inferior crossbreds but an element which counted in tho sale was the bidding from n Japanese quarter. This helped materially in tho maintenance of prices. Lambs wool recovered on opening rates and some quite good prices wero realised. Some of tho best prices wore:—"Mamakau" 12 bales at 21 Jd, AJB/Pahiatua 10 bales 201 d, MD. .Bagshot 9 bales at 20Jd, MD/Ditton 5 bales at 21d, Peninsula 8 bales at 20Jd.

The bulk of the lambs wool was selling at from 17£d to 19J<L Following are tho movements of prices in crossbreds compared with tho sale on January 12: Crossbreds 48/50s 2d down, 46/48s ljd to 2d, 44/46s 3id to 2d, 40/44s Id to ljd, 36/40s Id to ljd, lambs: Id to ljd down, bellies pieces and locks: Jd to Id down.
