MANAWATU SCOTTISH SOCIETY
ANNUAL MEETING. Mr David Buchanan presidod over the fourth annual meeting of the Manawatu Scottish Society which was held last evening, there being a very satisfactory attendance of members. The annual report for the year ending January 31, stated that the membership stood at 105 as against 130 for the previous year. The present membership was made up of 58 ladies and 47 men. A scries of monthly inglesides had been hold from March to December, also Halloween and a Burns’ supper night. All had been well attended. On January 22nd members and friends had held a very successful picnic a Eden Park, Tiakitahuna, and through tho generosity of Mr and Mrs D. Buchanan, a very delightful day had been spent. The executive deeply regretted losing the services of Mr Alexander (vice-presi-dent) and Mrs Alexander (ladies’ chairwoman) who had removed from the district. The thanks of the Society were due to the ladies’ committee which had assisted so willingly at all functions and to which much of the ensuing success was due. To the artists who had contributed to the several functions ,the society was also greatly indebted as well as to the Manawatu Highland Pipe Band for active assistance at all functions. The balance sheet showed a credit balance of £26 17/11; the report and balance sheet were adopted.
Election of Officers. The election of officers for the forthcoming year resulted: President, Mr J. Raleigh; vice-presidents, Messrs J. B. Cooper, J. Marshall; lion, secretary, Mr W. Salmon; lion, treasurer, Mr W. Allen; executive, Messrs S. Brown, Robt. Edwards, .T. Finnic, G. Glendinning; convenors of ladies’ committee, Mesdamos Forbes and Walker. This last appointment is an innovation, it being considered better to elect two ladies to convene a committee rather than to appoint a full committee as in previous years; hon. auditor, Mr R. A. Fuller.
The matter of the Manawatu Highland Pipe band joining up with the society was briefly discussed, but as no correspondence had passed on the subject, it was found impossible to proceed further in tho meantime. Mr Chas. Taylor, chairman of the band committee, explained that the band had done nothing towards joining the society as no invitation in that direction had been received.
As a result of the discussion, Mr R. Smith was appointed hon. piper to the society.
