They were in those positions passing the box for the first time. Both Herbilwyn and Sarsaparilla broke up two furlongs from home, aud Kempton, who was always handy, came to the fore to win from the steady-ruuuing Katutc, with Eizear next. Duke Bingen was fourth.

NEW ZEALAND’ TROTTING GOLD CUP, 4.30 class, two miles: 7—MATE O’ MINE, scr (M. B. Edwards) 1 I—LOGAN PARK, 24yds (W. J. Tomkiuson) 2 S—PADLOCK, 36yds (W. Hughes) 3

At a mile, Mate o' Mine, an outsider, .was still in charge, but Talent was in front of Tom Thumb. Pageant and Native Prince wove still handy over the last mile. A hard race ensued, the backmarkers picking up fast. ‘Mate ’o Mine however, held out well and won by two lengths from the fast-finishing Logan Park, who was three lengths in front of Padlock. Native Prince was fourth. The Pageant—Logan Park bracket was well supported. Free Advice also carried a load of cask.

After the conclusion of the race, the Hon. T. M. Wilford presented the New Zealand Trotting Gold Cup to Mr. R. Grant, owner of Mate ’o Mine. The president (Mr R. A. Armstrong) apologised for tho unavoidable absence of the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. Sir Joseph AVard), who was unable to attend on account of political work. M. B. Entering the straight the last ( time, Hinkler eame to the front and led Cora Taeks. Limosa, who was handy during the race, came up and passed Derby Lynn, who was fourth. That was the order at the finish. NOVICE DASH HANDICAP, 3.2 class, one mile and a-quarter:

Halmore, which paid nearly half a century, was a leader nearly throughout. Passing the judges' box the first time, he was in front of Idol Boy, who led the favourite, Choysa, and Slogan. Coming into the straight tho last time, Halmore still retained tho front position, pursued by Red Hey and Roger Lynn. Slogan was fourth and Wakefield last. QUALITY TROTTERS’ HANDICAP, 4.40 class, two miles: t 1— ELZEAE, 132yds (W. J. Tomkinson) 1 2 SISTER BEATRICE, 90yds (A. Corrigan) 2 S—SARSAPARILLA, 24yds (M. B. Edwards) 3

Also started: 6 Matu, 4 Proud Ata, 7 Duke Bingen, 3 Bonny Spec. Won by half a length, three lengths. Four furlongs from the start, Matu was in front of Duko Bingen and Proud Ata, the back-markers still being well behind. After another six furlongs had been covered, Duke Bingen had overtaken Matu, the' remainder being much the same as at the four furlongs. With another three-quarters of a mile to go, the back markers began to shorten up the gaps aud, when the straight was reached, both Eizear and Sister Beatrice were dangerous horses. The former held out right to the finish, with Sister Beatrice and Sarsaparilla • fighting for second positions. The latter broke up, however, and lost any chance he had of gaining second money. Proud Ata was fourth. DISPATCH HANDICAP, 2.46 class, one mile aud n quarter: I—LOGAN PARK, 24yds (W. J. , Tomkinson), ** ** ** *»: 1

Down the straight he headed Kiowa, who defeated Athalonc for second place very n&rrowly, It was an interesting race. For his win in the Improvers’ Handicap, Hinkler was penalised another 24yds, making his handicap in the Graecilield handicap 36yds.

ASHHURST-POIIANGINA RACES TO-MORROW.

No country club, indeed no club in tho country has a more wide-awake and knowledgable set of officials than has the Ashhurst-Pohangina Racing Club. Hence the Best wishes and support of the sporting public are always accorded it. To-morrow will see the staging of tho annual fixture at Ashhurst and a good programme will bo presetted. The first race starts at 11.45 and a special train leaves Palmerston North at 11 o’clock. The first race is the HACK HURDLES, of 150 sovs.; 1$ miles.

Lin Arlington’s form on the second day at Foxton, when he was jiist beaten by Deluge makes the son of Acre a strong possibility of tho jumping event. The distance is a furlong shorter, too. Atareria’s moods are uncertain and Locarno, 10.4, and Othon, carrying 9.13, will be his most dangerous opponents. Roburant finished with plenty of dash in each of his races at Foxton and this is the sort of course on which ho might sneak a win. However, the Awapuni candidate that will be most favoured with probably bo Lin Arlington. , The MAIDEN STAKES, of 170 sovs., 5 furlongs, will be run in two divisions. The first division will comprise: Many Acres, Miss Atanta, Marica, Bon Acre, Ahu Mai, Specdaway, Ao Marama, Town .Section, Mint Belle, Irish Mess, Vexillum, Vauclusc, The Perch, Tunbridge.

Bon Acre’s third in the Novice Stakes at Foxton will recommend him to many. In the second division there are Basaloma, Waiorua, Merry .Mixture, Wee Knight, Inflame, Bione, Atacama, Scottish Standard, Vanilla, Guide Light.

Bione seems to stand out on the recent form disclosed, but Inflame will be the hardest to beat.

Miss Pat has been put up to 9.8 for the Pohangina Handicap. At the weights, Epistle will be preferred, despite his wretched showing at Foxton. Bidgomount has climbed Tapidly up the scale and is good. The Raider may not find the track to his liking and Callapmore, though down in the weights, has had a heavy programme lately. Dobbin gave no indication at Marton that he is likely to be troublesome at the business end to-day, but he should still be subject to improvement on a turning course. Moutoa Treasury boat a pretty fair field of sprinters at Levin and presents herself here as a distinct possibility. She is also in the Raumai Handicap. White Ringlet’s intentions are plain, as he has been left in the open six furlongs in preference to the Siberia Hack. The race is .very open,

but Epistle should take some beating; otherwise Ridgemount may be the choice of punters.

SIBERIA HACK, of 150 sovs.'; 6 furlongs.

Two recently successful runners and Atholspear and Warfille have been rehandieapped for this event and may again bo worth watching. Grey Mist will be the most difficult one to overtake.

ASHHURST CUP, of 330 sovs.; 1J miles.

The Cup field has been heavily thinned down, but enough remain for a really good contest. Royal Game has been toiling along with the weight on but without much success. Anolo put up a good performance at Stratford, being runner-up in the big event each day and his consistency is not likely to bo lacking to-morrow. Kilmiss may not find the going suitable. Lady Limond showed a flash of her old form at Foxton, but it was only a flash and she finished sixth in the Cup. Keddar has been going on the right way and will go very close. Nucleus seems to have better betting propositions both above and below him. Henna was the unlucky horse in the Carnarvon Hack Cup, and here, with 7.9, she would challenge serious consideration, but Mani on the’same mark, cannot be overlooked. Kalos, Imperial Spark and Twink are all in racing fettle, so there will be plenty of choice offered punters, but the three that stand out in relief are Anolo, Keddar and Maui.

ICOMAKO HACK, of 150 sovs.; 7 furlongs.'

Gold Cure and Balloon have been rehandicapped for the Ivomako Hack, but if started, should be equal to the extra demand on their resources. Gold Bag is a promising sort and a horse that is due for a win at any time is Aurora Borealis. Of, those mentioned, Gold Cure and Aurora Borealis appeal most. RAUMAI HANDICAP, of 180 sovs.;, 7 furlongs.

If Maui goes after the Cup, he will probably not be a runner in tho Raumai. Moutoa Treasury, if started, should be equal to the task in tho other’s absence. Of the remainder, Kalos has the best certificate.

MANAWATU GORGE HACK, of 150

King Quex is the pick of the handicap in the Manawatu Gorge Handicap, and should bo equal to the opposition of Vexatious and company. If Balloon starts, ho is a possibility.

TRENTHAM TRACK NOTES.

SATURDAY MORNING’S AVORTv.

Although there was not a great deal of work at Trentham on Saturday morning there were one or two smart gallops. The trial grass was very fast and the good horses made smart times. They galloped in the centre, and as timed actually covered slightly over the distances named. The plough was a good deal slower, probably three to four seconds to the mile at least. Aussie strode over five furlongs in lmin. 1 4-osee. on the grass, with his mouth wide open, so that some idea of the merit of the gallop can be gauged. Usually he is plated.

On the Grass. Rapine and Star God were the first to go, Rapine on the outside. He bowled along very freely, running his first two furlongs in 25sec, three in 37sec, four in 51sec, and the mile in lmin. 43sec. Rapine went right away from his mate at the end, and finished up full of running. He pulled up muck better than he did yesterday, and should make quite a good showing at tho Trentham meeting, but looks too big yet to win a solid mile and a half event. Star God was not disgraced. Diana’s Lad went very freely over six furlongs in lmin ,17-Jsec., the last four in 51sec. This was- quite a good effort for a horse of his class.

Joy King and Awarere jumped away at the five-furlong post with Awarere in front Joy King caught his mato half-way, and was going away at the post in lmin. lsec, a smart effort. He ran his last half-mile in 4Ssec. Awerere is reported to be not a good track horse, but Joy King’s effort was very pleasing nevertheless. ' Toxcuma and Millais' galloped six furlongs in lmin. 17 2-ssecs., the last five furlongs in lmin. ssea. -

On the Plough Historic had Royal Saxon for a mato over a mile. They went very slowly over the early part and took lmin 50sce to run the full journey. Historic, however came away at the end of his task to score in great style. He carried only a light weight. Panther loafed over half a mild, ,In 56sec. He is in good order. Papatu alone covered a mile in lmin. 45sec. This effort compared very favourably with Rapine’s, considering tho difference in the tracks and that Rapine had a mate. Catkin and Bourse galloped a mile, Catkin finishing in front, the last six furlongs taking lmin. 21 2-ssccs. Most of the youngsters were sprinted down the straight half-mile on the course proper. Tobacco Land was ono exception, and his half-mile on the 'plough in 52scc with his trainer, J. T. Young, in the saddle was quito a good effort,
