Mr. T. E. Tooncy, of the Port' of London Authority, is leaving shortly on a tour of Australia and New Zealand with the view of emphasising the marketing and distribution facilities of the port of London.

In recognition of his service as a charter member and a past president, Mr John H. Dick was elected an honorary life member of the Palmerston North Lunch Club at yesterday’s annual meeting.

Mr. J. S. Barton, S.M., on the eve of his departure for Wellington, was furewelled by the legal profession, justices of the peace and police at Wanganui. Eulogistic references were made to the many fine qualities of the departing magistrate.

Members of the R.S.A. Eific Club met bn Monday evening to say farewell to Mr. A. F. Gilmore, a foundation member, who is leaving shortly for Wellington. He was presented with a bowls case and tendered best wishes for success in his new sphere of work.

Doctor Johannes Schmidt and his wife -and the officers of the Danish research ship Dana were given a civic welcome in' Wellington yesterday. Speeches of welcome and eulogy were delivered by th Mayor (Mr. Troup), Hon. J. G. *Cobbe (chairman of the Horbour Board) and others.

Mr. H. F. McClune, headmaster of the Hokowhitu School, who has accepted a similar appointment in _ Nelson, was met by the school committee on Monday evening and presented with a leather suitcase. Mrs. McClune was the recipient of a bedroom clock. Regret was expressed at their departure from Palmerston North.

Mr. and Mrs. John C. Young, of North street, left Palmerston North on Sunday night for a trip to California. On Saturday evening about 24 members of the staff of Messrs. Hoddcr and Tolley, of which Mr. Young is general manager, paid a surprise visit to their home to wish them a pleasant holiday and safe return. Mr. W. Crooke, the oldest member of the staff, spoke of the esteem in which Mr. Young was held and asked his acceptance of two travelling bags and a travelling rug. Others present, including Mr. T. E. Hodder (director of the firm) added their felicitations. Mr. Young expects to return to New Zealand in April.

Mr. and Mrs. J. T. J. Heatley, of Manawatu street, celebrated their silver wedding on January 7 when they were the recipients of many congratulations and a number of valuable presents, including one from tho Hokowhitu school committee. Occasion was also taken at a gathering of about 70 friends and relatives to wish them continued prosperity and many years of happiness. A number of toasts wero honoured, including "The Bride and Groom,” proposed by Mr. W. F. Woodroofe and replied to by Mr. Heatley. Mr. W. Huntington proposed the health of the bridesmaid (Mr. Heatley responding), Mr. Bush tho toast of the bride's father (Mr. Huntington replying) ,and Mr. A. W. Sutton the toast of the family to which Miss Zilla Heatley replied. Mr. G. Pattle acknowledged complimentary references to the guests mado by Mr. L. Heatley.
