The phrase, "Losing a ship for a ha’porth of tar,” does not apply to a ship at all. It refers to sheep, generally pronounced "ship” by rustics. Tho reference is to marking a sheep with its owner’s initials in hot tar. To lose a sheep through its not being marked is losing it for the want or "a ha-porth of tar.”
