PALMERSTON EFFORTS TO COMBAT SUMMER DEATH
LIFESAVING SOCIETY MEETING.. At last evening's meeting of the Manawatu centre of tho Royal Lifesaving Society, Mr. W. C. Collier, who presided, stated that it. would, be a source of pride and gratification to inembers to know that of the SOS awards made by Wellington centre during 1028 no fewer than 206 had been gained by candidates put forward bj tho local sub-centre. That the parent body appreciated the results was evidenced by the remarks included in its annual report. Members present wore Messrs W. C. Collier (in the chair), A. Campbell, E. Perrson, J. Christmas, E. Richardson, J. Fahey, E. Vnscy, A. Ferguson and R. Smell, secretary. The resignation of Mr. W. F. Dudson as chief honorary instructor was received with regret; the appointment of his successor was held over to the February meeting. As the result of an inquiry from the Levin branch of. the society, it was moved that when required an examiner from Palmerston North should proceed to Levin to put through candidates in that centre for the society's awards. The local centre has at tho request of the Tangimoana Beach Improvement Society, procured two fully-equipped lifesaving reels for the resort. The expense of procuring the apparatus is to be borne by the beach improvement body. The sub-centre approved of Awards of Merit being granted to Maxwell Jordan, Esmond Cutten and Charles Taylor, all of tho Palmerston North Boys’ High school and proficiency certificates and bronze medallions to Patricia A. Edwards and Rose E. Wischnewskv, of the Girl Guides. Members present constituted themselves into a sub-committee to make all arrangements for tho swimming carnival to be held on February 27.
