From Our Own Correspondent* Borough Council. % Tho ordinary monthly meeting, of the Foxton borough council was held last night in the Council Chambers, the Mayor (Mr. M. E. Perreau) presiding. ' Tho gasworks manager reported, that tho plant at the works is working satisfactorily. During the month several blocked services have been attended to, and one now service pipe had been laid and a gas cooker sold and fitted in. The balance of his time had been taken up attending to consumers * requirements generally. Tho road foreman reported on work during tho past month as. follows: —• Mowing grass at the cemetery,?removing tree guards at tho south end of Main street, mowing grass overhanging footpaths in various places, trimming willows obstructing view of, traffic approaching Avenue rond-Bussoll street intersection, , trimming trees Liddell street to clear electric wires, laying culvert in Liddell street for a property owner, grading Heta street, carting and spreading tarred metal at various street intersections and other general maintenance work. The grass in Victoria park had been cut and' cleared away. The street intersections mado up with tarred metal would be given a dressing of bitumen and chips shortly. Topdressing with bitumen tho Johnston street and Bussel street section of the Wellington-Auckland main highway was in progress.—The report was adopted. The borough treasurer reported that the district fund account was in credit £B2B 10s, as also were the following: Cemetery account £BO 4s 3d, fixed fleposit account £IOO, drainage connection loan aoeount £lsl 10s Bd.

Accounts amounting to £949 2s lid were passed for payment. Of this amount the sum of £737 3s 8d had been paid out since the last ordinary meeting. „ ' • . . The waterworks foreman reported that the sewers in Johnston, Bussell and Union streets had been flushed out and two new water services- and meters had been installed during the month. Various householders’ drains has also been cleaned out. During the month 2,275,000 gallons of water wero pumped, tho maximum demand indicator showing 30 amps. The .poundkeepec reported' that three head of stock had been impounded during the month, arid that several summonses had been served bn persons allowing stock to wander on thd roads.

General. ’ The following correspondence was received: From Messrs ‘William Cook and Sons Ltd. forwarding cheque for £42 2s representing royalty on tree? taken from the cemetery, .for, timber purposes. From the headmaster, Foxton school, thanking Council for free uso qf swimming baths and Easton .park for recent Thompson Shield tournament. From tho Manawatu county council advising that a contribution of £5 would, po made towards the cost of maintaining tho public comotery. Personal. Miss Margaret Barron, the 15 year old local champion runner, participated in the electric light sports conducted at the Basin Reserve on Saturday night by the Wellington . Amatour Athletic club. In tho 75 yards ladies’ scratch race, this youthful competitor ran third in her heat and fan second to Miss J. AViison in the final. The winner’s time was 9 4-5 secs. In tho 100 yards ladies’ handicap race off the two yards mark, Miss Barron ran third in the heat, tying with Miss Cannon, of Wanganui, off the nine yards mark. She did not, however,’ start in the final. Miss Barron also ran as one of the participants in the ladies * relay isco as a Hawke’s Bay representative, tho winning toara which defeated Wellington and Wanganui, Captain and Mrs. Matheson, who were recently transferred fyom.Rangiora to Foxton, have now entered into occupation of the Salvation Army quarters. Mr. W. Waters, who was for several years town clerty at Foxton, -subsequently taking a similar position at Eltharn, was a visitor to town last week. Mr. Waters has resigned his appointment at Eltharn to accept an important position in one of the cinema film companies in Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Christie, of Palmerston North, spent the- week-end with Mr. and Mrs. D. Christie, of Avenue road. The 100-guinea cup to be competed for at the Foxton races to-morrow is on view in the window of Messrs O. M. Ross Co., in Main street.
