Baby Bun is among the regular attendants at Ellerslie and is getting through useful work in preparation for meetings ahead. She has thickened a good deal lately and is more robust than at any previous stage of her career, o Now that she is out of the hack class Baby Bun needs to be carefully placed and T. George intends to race her on the country circuit, where there will be races to suit her.

Vallar is likely to be in demand ;for tho sprint events at the coming meetings and he will have a strong following if produced in the short races at Takapuna, where his ability _to begin quickly will be a factor in his favour. Vallar is being kept going steadily and

The Lover has raced unluckily in his last couple of starts, otherwise he would havo made better showings. The Romeo gelding is in great heart at present and should strip very fit when he makes liis next appearance at Takapuna, where he can be expected to give a good account of himself. Star Area, Battle Colours, Panther, Royal Saxon, Historic and Toxeuma are the six horses which claim engagements in both the Oup and Anniversary handicaps on the first day at Trentham. The acceptances should make clear the intentions of owners. In the Bowen Handicap at Ellerslie on January 2, Paganelli won under 9,11. lie has been given one pound'less in the Telegraph handicap at the Wellington meeting, 71bs. in front of Gascony. A stiff task has been set the Auckland gelding, but it is not beyond looks well after his recent racing. The best has not yet been seen of this smart galloper. As a result of a bruised foot Gala Day was only raced once during his trip to Taranaki for the holiday meetings and that was when he ran second to Berinthia in the Makiri hurdles on the final day at Stratford. It was unfortunate for his connections that Gala Day met with the mishap, as he,would probably have won a race if all had been well with him. Still he will get plenty of opportunities in tho next few months and should soon have a winning turn.

That speedy .spriter Moarirl has rejoined the active brigade, at Ellerslie after being on the easy list for some weeks. Hoariri has won twice in three starts this season and shonld extend his record when the tracks become easy again. Ho looks healthy after his rest and should come to hand again quickly.

A young horse who has improved considerably in appearance lately is Hannibal, a three-year-old gelding by Catmint from Nordiea, Up to the present Hannibal has not been required to do a great deal, but now that he is progressing nicely J- Lambess will move him along more seriously in the near future. With a continuation of his present rate of progress Hannibal should develop considerably in the next few months.

With the weights for the Wellington Cup now declared (acceptances due .tomorrow night) another of the leading events which form a feature in tho round of the season’s racing is on hand for solution. In casting the handicap Mr H. Coyle once again placed Rapine at the head of the list, 9.5 being the impost awarded to the veteran on this occasion. In tho race of 192 G Rapine carried 10.2 into third place behind Rapier (7.8) and To Monaqui (9.3). The Martian gelding is now three years old and it may be doubted if he an reproduce his best form. Mask (8.11) may prove the best of the quintette ranged from 8. .9, but there will, I think, bo a tendency to search for the winner lower down. Oratrix (8.3) is not harshly treated, and, though Hoylake (8.1) was a disappointment at Ellerslie, it may be as well to keep the English-bred horse on tho right sido, for with ground to his liking he can compass a mile ad a-quarter brilliantly. Pink Note (7.13) can be voted nicely treated. Last summer ho won the Dunedin Cup under 8.5 in 2min. 32scc. and this season he won tho Mosgiel handica-p and the Otago handicap under the respective imposts of 8.5 and 8.13, and in each instance he compassed the mile and a-quarter in good style. Star Area showed himself up attractively at Awapuni last month, when he won the Manawatu Cup (li miles) and the President's Handicap (1J miles). In the first-named race the son of Acre only carried 7.0 but ho had 8.2 in the saddle when he won the latter race, and lie must be accounted to have a chance with 7.10 in the irentham lace. Of the ’ others lower down the list Transformer, (7.9), Catkin (7.7) and White Fang (7.3) road nicely treated.
