CUBAN CAUSE OF COMIC COMMOTION
PROTESTS BRITISH BIRTH.
United Press Association—By Electri# Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, Jan. 10.
Jackson, tho Cuban ringleader in the Jervis Bay trouble, who is detained at Hull, is causing a comic commotion in official circles. British officials declare that Jakson at first swore he was born at Hull. The authorities extensively investigated his statement, but it could not be substantiated. Jackson then said he was born at Liverpool. Similar investigations produced a similar result. When the Cuban was again informed of the result he replied that, he was born in Brisbane.
The officials state that the possibilities are enormous, because Jackson may swear that his birth place is any of thousands of towns, each necessitating fruitless investigations. Official circles are of the opinion that if Jackson was born in Britain, then he must be freed, but if he wa3 born anywhere else, then the Commonwealth from where he came, must repatriate him.
In the meantime, this central figure of a world-wide nine days wonder, continues to be kept at British expense. His fellow stowaways, who are all British, were freed as soon as they were landed.
A message published on January 8 stated: It is learned that Jackson, the Cuban half caste, who was the central figure in the Jervis Bay trouble last year ,aud who arrived in England by the Largs Bay from Colombo, has been sent to gaol at Hull. The British authorities are not allowing him to land, because he is a non-Britisher. It is understood that there is a likelihood that tho Australian authorities will be held responsible for him and that he may have to be returned to Australia. The remainder of the stowaways, including the Cuban, were, in the words of the ship’s officers: “docile as lambs throughout the voyage.” •
