HOTEL BUILT IN NAVAL ARMOUR

Big slabs of armour such as naval constructors place along tho danger line of America’s first line fighting ships will support the 1200-room addition to the Hotel St. George, Brooklyn, which will riso 31 storoys above the corner of Pineapple and HicksStreets. The armour is being used instead of grills, which have been used for column footing in all previous big operations. Each slab weighs 39,000 lb. It measures nine feet square and is 12 inches thick. One of the preliminary tasks of the builders is to keep three buildings surrounding the site from slipping into the hole. This has required the building of 250 feet of wall three feet thick at a level of 50 feet below the street. This has been accomplished without damage to the buildings.
