POPE’S TEMPORAL POWER CONCEDED
TINT PAPAL STATE. Uni tod Press Association—By Electri# Telegraph—Copyright. Received Thursday 8.45 p'.m. LONDON, Jan. 9. In view of frequent and conflicting statements concerning the probable settlement of tho 58-year-old estrangement between tho Vatican and the Government of Italy, the “Daily News” correspondent in Rome is endeavouring to ascertain the truth. Ho says nego tiations have undoubtedly reached a conclusive phase, enabling the Pope to rule as sovereign with a small State of 15,000 subjects. <• • Mussolini's latest speech in tho Chamber, announcing great events for the next Parliament ,is interpreted as a hint at this epoch-making settlement. The negotiators were a lawyer, Signor Francesco Pucelll, brother of tho Papal Nuncio at Berlin, on behalf of the Vatican and Councillor Dominico Barones, on behalf of Italy. Tho latter died recently, after receiving the Pope’s blessing. The negotiations were then practically complete. Signor Pucelli is departing for Jerusalem.
