According to a bulletin of the American Research Foundation, the United States yearly uses 252 gallour, of crude, petroleum per person, whilo the T#«t of the world uses 42 gallons to five persons.
Special petrol, containing ether, chloroform and iodine, and costing £4 a gallon, is being used bv motor cycle riders on the English dirt tracks.
Despite its possession of a good tramway system, the city of Rome has decided to adopt motor buses in their place. The tram service is apparently being scrapped on account of its everlasting renewals and general obstruction to busv traffic.
When removing the engine-head prior to decarbonising, don’t ruin the gasket by forcing a screw-driver in between the head and the gasket. First loosen all the cylinder head bolts, and then sciow ihem up again with the fingers. Start the engine only for a few revolutions —and you will then be able in most cases to remove the head without difficulty.
An engine so adjusted that it stalls easily while idling is apt to trick the owner into thinking ho has switched off the ignition after garaging the car at night.
The speed at which you travel has much to do with petrol consumption. Don’t drive fast if you find yourself running out of fuel.
Switch off the lights when using the starter to save the battery, and obtain a quicker start.
A flickering indicator on the ammeter is a warning that the engine isn’t running evenly. Some drivers whose cars are not equipped with engine heat indicators accept a steady ammeter as an indication that the engine has warmed up.
The man ahead may have a good reason for not taking what seems to be an opportunity to pass the car ahead of him. Acting on this theory, it may be wise to stay in line too.
