At the Cheltenham Sports, held on New Year's Day, one of the most successful competitors was Miss Jean gcott, of 92 Ferguson Street, Palmerston North. This little girl is 11 years old and was placed Ist for seauntriubhas, 16 years and under; 2nd., sword dance 12 years and under; 2nd. reel o’tulloch; 3rd., sailor’s hornpipe 16 years and under, and 3rd., Irish jig, 12 years' and under. At the South Auckland sports held recently at Hamilton, one of the biggest meetings in New Zealand, Jean was placed Ist. in Highland Fling under 12; 2nd. scauntriubhas under 12; Ist., fling under 14; 2nd., reel under 14; and was awarded the points cup for competitors under 14.
A pupil of the Egmont Village school, Taranaki, Eileen O’Byrne, has a remarkable record in connection with the calf-rearing competitions promoted by the boys’ and girls’ agricultural clubs. At the . recent breakingup ceremony she was presented wit two cups, three gold medals, a silver button, and two framed certificates. In addition she won £5 2s in prize moneys for her successes in connection with last year’s competitions, when she won the championshi-p for dairy type, was second for condition championship, being beaten only by half a point, _ Both these successes were in the FriesianShorthorn section. At .the A. and P. Show she won the Margaret Challenge Cup and exhibited the champion calf at the show. This year she has secured the championship for dairy typo and second for condition. Another member of the same -family, Ada O’Byrne, also secured two certificates in the calf-rearing, and showed her versatility by winning the first prize in the senior hurdles, second in the senior championships, and second m the 100 and 200 .yards. .She also won the school championship at both Inglewood and Kaimata spoths.
