SPORTING

New Year Racing at Ellerslie HOW THE G.N. DERBY WAS HUN. Fourteen started in the Great Northern Derby, and Prodice, Toxeuma and lied Heckle were heavily backed in that order. From a good start Sir Russell, Toxeuma, Prodice, Perception, and Kinross raced together in front past the stand, with Moorgas and Briar Root handy. Going out of the straight Perception took charge, and he was the leader along the' back from Sir Russell, Prodice, Toxeuma, Moorgas, and Kinross. Perception and Moorgas showed the way through the cutting to Toxeuma, Prodice, Gold Money and Briar Root. Perception and Moorgas were first into the straight from Prodice, Toxeuma, Gold Money and Briar Root, with Red Heckle coming fast. Near the distance Red Heckle ranged up with the leaders and came on to win by three parts of a length from Prodice. Toxeuma was a length and a-half away third and Gold Money fourth. Then came Concentrate, Perception, Moorgas, Tcheka and Briar Root. The winner was last with six furlongs to go and finished in good style, after getting checked at the distance. Prodice was never further back than fourth once the field settled down and was outstayed by Red Heckle. Toxeuma also had a good run and failed to stay. The following sectional times were supplied by the official timekeeper, Mr J. K. Douglas:—Five furlongs, 1 min 8 l-55.; six furlongs, lm 33 2-5 s.; 1 mile, 1 m, 46 l-55.; nine furlongs, 1 min. 58 2-55., and the full distance 2 min. 37 2-ss. The last halfmile was run in 51 l-ss. Pegaway’s A.R.C. Handicap. The Auckland Racing Club Handicap was a great betting race, and there was heavy support for Hoylake, Corinax and Oratrix. White Fang ran to the front quickly, and led past the stand six lengths clear of Papatu, with Corinax, Pegaway, Count Cavour, Mask, Catkin and Desert Glow all in close order. Turning into the back White Fang was out 15 lengths from Papatu, who was closely followed by Corinax, Catkin, Pegaway, Count Cavour, Thursby, Vertigem and Desert Glow. In the next few furlongs White Fang was steadied, and at the halfmile post he just led Corinax, Papatu, Vertigcrn, Catkin, Transformer and Pegaway. White Fang was still in charge at tho turn, closely attended by Corinax, Vertigern, Catkin, Transformer and Pegaway. with the others bunching. Once straightened up the field spread across the course, and in a wonderful finish Pegaway did best to win by three-parts of a length from Transformer who beat White Fang by a head. Oratrix was right up fourth, with Corinax', Catkin, Hoylake, Desert Glow and Papatu almost in line next. Hitherto Pegaway had found a mile and a half a little too far for him, but on this occasion he ran it out in great style. Transformer went a good Tace, and White Fang stayed on surprisingly well considering the use that was made of him early. At a mile and a quarter he should bo very difficult to beat. .Hoylake was in the rear most of the way and did not appear to be racing generously early. Oratrix and Corifl&x went solid races, and Vertigern was in the picture to the distance. Aussie Again.

Eight started in the Newmarket Handicap, and Aussie was a little better fancied than Paganelli, who had a good call over The Hawk. The Hawk and Tea Time found their feet quickest, to lead through the cutting from High Finance, Kingfield, Paganelli and Aussie. After three furlongs were covered Kingfield ran to the front and led into tho straight from The Hawk, High .Finance, Aussie and Paganelli, who were in close order. Aussie had charge at tho distance, where Paganelli was on his quarters. Over the last bit Aussie came away to win by two and a half lengths from Paganelli, High Finance being threo- lengths away third. Kingfield was fourth, succeeded by Tho Hawk, Mae room, Town Bird and Tea Time. Aussie won brilliantly and provede much superior to Paganelli in the last furlong. High Finance made a fair showing, but - the others were well beaten.

National Yearling Sales HIGH QUALITY AND MANY - STRAINS REPRESENTED. Features of this year’s national sales, to be held on Wednesday, January 23, at Trentham, catalogues of which have been sent out, will be the record offerings of the progeny of that great sire Limond and of the successful young sire Chief Ruler. The former will have four colts and four fillies to represent him. Their quality is outstanding, for it is asserted that in the own sisters to Commendation and to Episode and Honour, no fillies of higher merit than this pair have represented the Koatanui stud. Of the colts, there is Agrion’s own brother and, by Thespian, a three-quarter brother to Ceremony and Lysander. Then, among others, Chief Ruler, whose stock won four of the two-year-olds last week, and provided the second runners in two as well, will have a high-class representation in (from Westmere) an extraordinary good-moving and a handsomc-looking bay colt out of Rosellate, half-sister to those highclass winners, Solfanello and Roseday, a brown colt out of Silver Link (uam of Silverminc), a chestnut colt out of Martianette, a half-sister by Martian to the dam of Oratress, and a chestnut colt out of Baby Doll, whose first foal, by Tea Tray, was h winner in Victoria

recently at his first start. The fillies include an own sister to that good sprinter To Atiawa; a second is a chestnut out of the half-sister to Star Ranger; another, like Dalston, is out of a Martian mare. This is Nottava, a half-sister to Rapier’s dam. Defunct Catmint has also a record list, included in the Spearmint horse’s representation being an own brother to Catkin, Valkyrian and Potoa will be represented by a team of two colts and five fillies, as will Kilbroney. That brilliant sire, Paper Money, has three particularly good eolts to represent him, while the Hawke’s Bay sire Leighton has a similar number. Hunting Song, by Hurry On, has three colts and a filly. Grandcourt has five, a black colt being out of Aureate, sister to Desert Gold. Psychology, Grcyspear, Tonbridge, Tea Tray, Lackham, Lord Qucx are all to bo represented, and sires whose yearlings will be from their first' crop of youngsters include Weathervane, a son of Lemberg, bred by the King; Diecquevod, by Diadumenos, and a close relative to Gallinule, the New Zealand Derby winner. Black Ronald (by Magpie), the Australian sire, Orby’s Pride (by Orby), Royal Divorce (by King’s Proctor), Last Dart (by Spearmint), and Arausio (Iby Sunstar). A very attractive offering will be put forward on tho second day ,including 40 horses in training, 16 brood mares, including dams of winners, with foals at foot by Limond, Chief Ruler, Leighton, Sky Blue, etc. Oratress (dam of the New Zealand cup winner Oratrix) has a colt foal at foot by Hunting Song), and has been served by Diacquevod, as has also that fine mare Lady Desmond. A number of wellbred and untried two and three-year-olds are also catalogued.

A final reminder is given owners and trainers that nominations for all events at the Wellington Racing club’s summer meeting, also forfeit of one sov. for the Wellington Staki-s, close at the office of the club, Woodward street, Wellington, to-night at nine o’clock.

Owners and trainers are again reminded of the day and time for tho closing of nominations for the Ash-hurst-Pohangina meeting, which is Saturday, January 5 at 3 o’clock.

Over 2000 passengers were conveyed by rail to the Marton races. These travelled by two specials from Palmerston North, one from Wanganui and onp from the Main Trunk. It was record business for the Railway Department.

When The Raider won tie Colyton Handicap at Feilding, his pilot, K Voitre, also won a handsome, inscribed gold watch, which Mr. J. M. Duri-e forwarded to him the other day. The though uppermost in the diminutive horseman’s mind as he was within an ace of success in the Kawau Handicap at Awapuni was the gold chain whicli was to accompany the timepiece, but not doubt other opportunities will be afforded Voitre of securing the sportsman’s trophy.

Five jockeys won the eight events on Tuesday at Marton and six shared the honours for the seven professional races on the second day. As a result, E. A.' Keesing and K. Robinson each take three championship points, A. McDonald,' A. Hobs-on, A. G. Murray and C. Davis two, and K. Voitre one.

E. E. Hatch took Oallanmore and Hymestrason to Marton and had the bad luck to get into the money four times without scoring a win. Hymestrason filled second berth in each of his starts and C-allanmore, after weighing in fourth in the Railway Handicap, was runner-up in the Telegraph Handicap on Wednesday and third in the Turakina Handicap.

Agrion, Prince Humphrey, and Honour, the three last winners of tho Royal Stakes, were all piloted by T. Green. This is a record that takes some beating in recent years.

The glorious uncertainty of racing was once again pointedly demonstrated in the contest for tho Clifford Plate at Auckland, The field for the milo end a-hal£ weight-for-ago race only numbered a trio, and tho prospects of Laughing Prince were viewed in so favourable light as to cause him to be made a Strong odds-on favourite. The Australian-bred horse went up to w T iu his race six furlongs from home, and with the pace right on he appeared to be a cortainty at the head of the straight. Mask, however, developed a fine dash of pace under pressure, and getting level with tho favourite at the main stand he wore him down and won by a length, amid a scene of great excitement.
