20 PER CENT DROP IN HOLIDAY BETTING

A further indication that less money is being spent in racecourse betting is provided by the volume of betting during the Auckland summer racing and trotting carnivals just closed. Tha totalisator investments in the city during tho holidays amounted to £489,350, a decrease of £113,331 compared with the corresponding seven clays of 192728, and a decrease, compared with 192627, of £58,138. There was a total decrease of £75,439, or 20 per cent., in the investments at Ellcrslic this year, compared with last summer carnival. The decline in totalisator receipts during tho trotting carnival was £37,982, or 19 per cent. Nearly two-thirds of the £489,350 put through tho totalisators during this carnival was handled on four days at Ellcrslic. Yesterday was the only day on which this ‘year’s betting at Ellerslie showed an increase (£1518). The Government taxation on the gallops totalled £24,570. Tho amount of taxation from the trotting investments is not availablo yet.
