NEW STANDARDISED LIGHT AEROPLANE

British Development

WINGS INTERCHANGEABLE, ALSO MANY OF THE PARTS SPEED ATTAINABLE 103 M.P.H. Official Wireless. Received Thursday. 7 p.m. RUGBY, Jan. 1. A now type of machine has been added to the scries of British light aeroplanes. It marks an interesting development in tho production of British aircraft. Tho machine has bceu designed by Mr. Simmonds, who was formerly on the technical staff of tho constructors of the well-known Supcrmarinc Southampton flying boats and has been named the Simmonds Spartan. The whole of the first batch of 12 machines has been ordered and the first machine will be sent to America on Thursday. Australia has ordered three for private owners. One is going to South Africa; more are booked for the United States and the remainder are for Home purchasers. The main claim for the new machine is in the method of making all the wings interchangable and also many O. the parts, such as ailerons, elevators, rudder, tailpiece, fin and flying wires. Tho basis of this construction is the use of symmetrical wing sections and although' it has always been considered that they have certain disadvantages, compared with the more usual wing, with a different camber top and bottom, the designor of the Spartan claims that the particular section he has evolved compares well with those used on other light aircraft. The engine is tho Cirrus mark 111., which -is a development of the type already widely circulated ovei tho world. The maximum speed is stated to be 103 miles an hour.
