Received Thursday 9.30 p.m. NEW YORK, Jan. 2. “I don’t believe prohibition evor will bo enforced,” declared Mr W. K, Hearst, in announcing a prize of £SOOO for tho best plan to repeal the Eighteenth Amendment, but substitute in place of prohibition, a more liberal and more American measure. Another newspaper, the New York Telegram, opened its New Year survey by showing that 24 per cent of tho liquor sold in New York “speakeasies” contained poison in some form and ten per cent of the New Year’s entire supply contained wood alcohol. Thirty investigators worked for three weeks, getting 500 samples from 400 illegal saloons.
