FRIENDLY SOCIETIES’ PICNIC

ENJOYABLE DAY AT GORGE. Members of the various Palmerston and Woodvillc friendly societies gathered on New Year’s Day for their annual picnic excursion which was held on this occasion at the Gorge, near the Gorge bridge. Residents from both sides of tho range gathered by train and car, and a most enjoyable time was spent in the environs of this delightful spot dcs. pite rain which fell late in the afternoon. Notwithstanding the showers, a large number of events were run off, both for children and adults. The ham race for which about 60 blindford competitors entered was a great event and caused heaps of fun. An icc cream and soft drinks stall run by the committee was greatly appreciated by everybody and turned in a handsome profit. The Friendly Societies’ Council, assisted by members of Palmerston and Woodvilk; lodges, had control of the gathering and spared no pains to give the picnickers a good time. The arduous secretarial duties were efficiently performed by Messrs F. Holgerson (secretary for the Palmerston Council) and E. H. Giles (Woodvillc). The railway authorities showed every consideration in the handling of the special train and earned tho thanks of all present. Results:— Girls under 6: J. Dyer I, K, Millet 2, F. The blindfold race, for a hara, in which about 60 competitors took part, Was won by C. K. Lano .
