ANNUAL SPORTS OF BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL

Twenty-fifth Meeting

E. Fletcher, Senior Champion; R. Moxon, Junior Honours

After a threatening morning, the weather cleared yesterday afternoon to show off the attractive grounds, which were at their best for the important occasion of the Boys’ High School annual sports.

The running tracks were in splendid condition, but a stiff wind blowing down the sprint track spoilt all chances of record-breaking for the short distance men. In the distance events, however, R. Elliott of Gordon club, clipped 1 2-5 seconds off the junior quarter mile championship record, which was established by D. Bropby in 1929. The senior quarter mile record also went by the board, S. Spencer of Kia Ora club covering the distance in 54 1-5 seconds, one second bettor than the record established by D. Brophy in 1922.

In the cricket bull throwing event for boys under 36 years, A. Cutler (Kia Ora) established a new record with a throw of 89ycls, Ift, 2ins. A large number of past pupils of the school with parents and friends of of the boys, attended during the afternoon. Pupils of tho (jirls’ High School were also present. Afternoon tea was dispensed in the Assembly hall by a committee of ladies, beaded by Mrs. J. A. Colquhoun. At the conclusion of the events, the prize cards won during the afternoon were presented by Mrs. IV. R. Birnle, wife of the chairman of tho Board of Governors.

On the call of tho Rector, Mr. J. Murray, the assembled boys gave three cheers for Mrs. Birnie, tho ladies of the committee, and all others who had assisted in tho running and organisation of the sports. The staff of the school, aided by the boys’ games committee, had a hard day’s work in supervising the events, but the smooth Working of all arrangements more than compensated them for the pains they took. Messrs J. A. Colquhoun and W. P. Anderson acted as judges, Mr. E. J. Werry had the starting pistol and Mr. P. O. Skoglund was announcer. The boys’ games committee consisted of E. Fletcher, A. Tremewan, J. McHaffio, B. McCorkindalo and N. Fletcher. A well set out programme, with efficient black-board organisation, kept all present conversant with the progress of' events, while generous seating accommodation under tho shado of tho trees catered excellently for the comfort of the public. An ice cream stall for the benefit of the funds of the school games club proved especially popular. School Trophies Won.
